Diablo 2 in VR looks like a completely different game from a first-person perspective

In a nutshell: Here's one you probably didn't have on your 2026 bingo card. As aspiring modder has created a version of the beloved classic Diablo II for virtual reality headsets. The project is a bit rough around the edges but feels completely natural and looks like a blast to play. And fortunately, you can do just that right now.

The mod comes courtesy of Reddit user Fantastic-Author2736. A clip shared on YouTube shows the modder playing as a sorceress in first-person view. The game's main interface is off screen, and key items like the map and inventory have been moved to the player's hand and belt. In the minute-long snippet, we see the modder exploring an early area in the game. A handful of enemies are encountered and defeated, and some items are picked up as well.

FlatVR and BodyWalk were used to create the mod, we're told, and they're also listed in the game's requirements on GitHub. FlatVR is used to show the picture in the headset, and BodyWalk "hands the head to the game." The creator has also listed recommended in-game settings for the best possible experience. For example, DLSS and vertical sync must be disabled as they interfere with how the image is drawn onto each headset screen, and anti-aliasing is best set to FXAA or MSAA, not TAA.

The Diablo II VR port is available to download over on GitHub. The latest version, 0.141, fixes the sky in several areas including Tristram, Kurast, Travincal, and the Chaos Sanctuary, and addresses a glitch with the barbarian's left hand. With any luck, the mod will continue to evolve into a polished end product.

Projects like this are great for gamers, and help demonstrate to developers possible ideas for future titles. Some already expect the recently announced Diablo V to take a step in this direction with over-the-should camera views, but we'll have to wait to know for sure what Blizzard is cooking up. As of writing, Diablo V is on track to arrive in the spring of 2029.

VR makes me wish 3D would make a come back. I like the visuals but hate the controllers. I got a projector last winter and having a wall of video almost feels 3D and the active 3D glasses are nice for movies, but that would basically be 30FPS and latency on projectors is garbage to say the least.

My one time with VR I was playing Skyrim but he had it setup to use an xbox controller. It was cool to look around and I could see that being very immersive but when the camera locks you in place for cut scenes that made me feel. Maybe you get used to that?

Stereo vision makes every game look like this. It's the interface that matters. Shudder glass's are still a far far better option then strapping a giant bit of plastic to your face.

Many ar glasses have 3d built in of a click of a button or 3d party apps. Eg. URXR glasses. It's definitely being streamlined as a standard feature among the competition as well as Asus's X real glasses.

Now, try playing a Barbarian in VR. It will be a nightmare to swing your arms like crazy in hell.... (No pun intended)
