Did blowing into Nintendo cartridges actually help?

My friends dad used a big qtip looking thing with a alcohol type solution and it really helped some problem games.

Inserted cartridge, pressed down, placed second cartridge above cage.
Prolly did more damage to the contacts in the system, but it worked like a charm.

Blowing, wiping with the finger, repositioning, nudging, pushing the reset button fifty times, banging the top of the system, holding in power and the reset button, shaking the game, put something on the game to keep it down, and wiggling the RF switch.

I'm pretty sure there are some other remedies I'm missing, but I did all of those just so I could play the game for an hour (my daddy was very strict).
