In a nutshell: Nintendo is bringing back one of its most popular games for a new run on its latest handheld, nearly 30 years after the original. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was announced during the Nintendo Direct presentation on June 9, and will be out later this year on the Switch 2.

The minute-and-a-half teaser doesn't show any actual gameplay, nor does it provide a launch window outside of 2026. We also don't know how much Nintendo is planning to charge for the game, although it's probably a safe bet to assume this will be a premium title with a matching price tag. All we really know at this hour is that the game is indeed in the works and is destined for the Switch 2 later this year.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrived on the Nintendo 64 in late 1998 and was unlike anything seen up to that point. The 3D action adventure game was initially planned for the 64DD, but was eventually moved to cartridge when that peripheral was canceled. Despite having just 32MB of memory to work with, Nintendo put out a masterpiece that pushed the limits of storytelling, puzzle-solving, and combat to new heights.

Nintendo sold roughly 7.6 million copies of Ocarina of Time during its run, good enough for fourth on the list of best-selling N64 games behind GoldenEye 007, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario 64. In 2022, the game was inducted into the Strong National Museum of Play's video game hall of fame alongside Dance Dance Revolution, Ms. Pacman, and Sid Meier's Civilization, cementing its place in history as one of the greatest video games of all time.

The remake is part of Nintendo's 40th annual franchise celebration, and adds to an already stacked 2026 that includes several high-profile game launches culminating with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI this fall.

For those needing to scratch their Ocarina of Time itch a bit sooner, Nintendo already offers a version of the original game through its Switch Online subscription service.

Anyone else getting a little tire seeing all of these cash-grab remakes? Nostalgia is nice and all, but it just feels like enabling lazy development at this point.
I would not mind as much if the price wasn't the same as a newly released game. For example, if this came out the same time as BOTW or TOTK and they were charging the same price... heck no.

Based on my experience with Nintendo, I would be amazed if they did not charge brand new game rate on it.

I don't really care about the price as long as it's under 100$AUD - and I'm not rich 🤑 Starfox remake looks great 😀 As long as the title offers some enjoyment I'm happy paying the cost.

I find that far too many people purchase digital games either through console xbox/ps/switch or pc/handheld steam/epic/etc only to not play their purchases at all. It's like buying books and letting them sit on a shelf or in a box doing nothing.

They're not selling it to the people wallowing in nostalgia for smeary graphics at 20fps, played on small CRT TVs in the mid to late 90s but the children of those now grown up 90's kids with their own families.

Where is the Switch 2 OLED? Not buying LCD trash

The LCD panel used on Switch 2, is even among the worst panels ever made. So sluggish. Insanely slow pixel transition times.

People that only use it in docked mode might not care but if you have to use this in handheld mode, you will scream.

Nintendo should make a Switch 2 Pro with focus on Docked mode, maybe no screen at all (target Sony PS even harder) and a Switch 2 OLED ASAP.

I can agree that the screen on the switch 2 is meh but I use a 15+ year old FHD monitor to play games with both the Switch OLED and Switch 2. I have played some hours on the OLED and it is beautiful 😍 - and I use to have a 4K TV but circumstances have forced me back into the stone age. I really do salivate at premium high resolution displays. If you can't appreciate detail you most likely have eyesight issues.

They're not competing with the Xbox or PS on a hardware level. They might release an OLED model down the road, or they might just go with miniLED or some alternative display technology.

Mini LED makes no sense, as powerdraw and thickness increases.

Steam Deck OLED and Switch OLED has much better batterylife overall, thanks to the OLED panel.
