Doom Eternal can hit 1,000 fps courtesy of the id Tech 7 engine

WTF?! With Doom Eternal's release just around the corner, id Software has revealed that their new id Tech 7 engine is capable of pushing the game up to an insane 1,000 fps. Although current-gen hardware doesn't support nor is powerful enough to handle such frame rates, the devs are looking to make Doom Eternal a game worth revisiting down the line for players with high-end setups in the future.

Doom Eternal's demon-slaying at 4K/60fps will be good enough to satisfy most people, however, like the game's 2016 reboot, the focus is on moving and causing carnage as fast as possible.

For the upcoming game, that job will be handled by the id Tech 7 engine, which aside from enabling bigger, vibrant explosions and better particle effects, will also be able to render the game at unprecedented frame rates.

"On id Tech 6, we maxed it out to 250 frames per second. This game, if you have the hardware right, it could hit 1,000 frames per second. That’s the max we have," said Billy Khan, id Software's lead engine programmer, in an interview with IGN.

"There's really no upper limit," said Khan, adding that the studio built some testing hardware where they had scenes running at 400 fps. "For people who have 144hz monitors – or even the new monitors that you’ll see coming out that are even above that – going forward, this game will hold up for many years, and it will give you really amazing opportunities to leverage that hardware," he continued.

The new engine is also more efficient in CPU core(s) utilization and will scale across a wide range of players' hardware, from very old to the newest "that may not even be in the market," notes Khan, allowing the studio to future-proof the engine and result in "massive improvements" for gamers every time they upgrade their system.

Sounds like this could be a game (engine) that would be interesting to test from a lowly 2C4T Athlon 3000G all the way up to a 64C Threadripper.

My understanding here is that their new engine scales very well with increasing core counts.

"Getting hold of an Imp at 1,000 fps would be quite the challenge"

Uh, last I knew, higher fps did not mean the game ran faster. Rather it keeps frame clipping/screen tearing from being noticeable. So the "Imp at 1,000 fps" should be easier. Has this changed?

Exactly, it's a stupid caption that makes no sense. Higher fps just means smoother, not faster.

As long as the internal game ticker doesnt change rate with FPS, it wont be faster, per se, but what I will say is that as someone used to 60hz refrsh rates, plating Borderlands 2 at 144 hz took some getting used to. Everything did feel way faster because wtih significantly lower latency between frames you see things coming sooner, and you have to regear your brain to expect things sooner. It gives the illusion of things running faster when they actually arnt. Same as watching the hobbit at 48 FPS.

Well it is published by Bethesda lmao

Smoother yes. Illusion of running faster? No

Please. Please be reasonable in your PR stunt, id Software. Maybe after 20 years we can achieve what you claim that we can achieve your 1000fps, with all our settings MAXed out in our then contemporary CPUs and graphic cards.

There are suckers ready to buy your DOOM Eternal on the day of release, anyway.

Don't worry. You will get your sales. Including during the sale that I will get 5 years from now.

Even wow was heavy to run. now we need getting those titan x gpus and dual tripple quadro cores. or 48 cores and so on to run a modified doom 2016 engine. you could run in low quality to 2k-8k. no you dont need a be(a)st. if it has the same specs as doom 2016 you can run it like a pro system req. can I run it site (some blocked sites) https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/doom/13138 doom 2016 low spec pc in tat time GOD eough. https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/doom-eternal/17891 doom e not so bad system req https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/25167590
