I'm "TRYING" to remove the harddrive to e-cycle the rest. The tower has been dead & offline for about 5+ years, about how long does it take the stuff on the harddrive to not be readable ??

In theory, the data retention on hard platters runs into decades. However, since HDDs aren’t sealed units (unless they’re helium ones), the bearings and other moving parts are exposed to environmental changes. Left unused for a few years and there’s a reasonable chance that the drive just won’t spin up. But your old drive still fires up, then the data is still recoverable.

Even putting holes in it won't make it totally data secure. Better to follow a method, like this:

Ah sorry! In that case, it’s highly unlikely anyone would go to the effort to take the platters out and put them into a working version of the drive. It should be safe enough to dispose of it as is, but a few holes, nice gouges across the surface, etc will do nicely.

Thank you
