Elon Musk says disgruntled Tesla employee was behind "extensive" sabotage

Recap: Tesla has been going through a difficult time lately, facing safety questions over its Autopilot system, layoffs, and production issues with its Model 3. But according to CEO Elon Musk, some of its problems were the result of internal sabotage by an employee, who may not have been working alone.

CNBC obtained an email sent by Musk to every Tesla worker on Sunday. It says that the staff member in question had admitted to “quite extensive and damaging sabotage to [Tesla’s] operations,” which includes the modifications of the “Tesla Manufacturing Operating System under false usernames,” and sending “large amounts of highly sensitive Tesla data to unknown third parties.”

The employee, who is now being questioned by the company, says he was angry over not receiving a promotion. Musk says this was the right move, “in light of these actions.”

A disgruntled worker taking out their anger on an employer isn’t unusual, but Telsa and Musk are investigating whether this person was working with outside entities, such as “Wall Street short-sellers” or “oil & gas companies.” The CEO also questions if “the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors” were involved. “If they’re willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they’re willing to cheat in other ways?” he wrote.

Musk sent a separate email addressed to everyone at his company yesterday. In it, he talks about “another strange incident that was hard to explain”: a small fire at the Fremont facility on Sunday—the fifth since 2014. While he says this could be a random event, Musk quotes former Intel CEO Andy Grove’s “Only the paranoid survive” warning.

Musk’s email asks staff to be “extremely vigilant,” particularly as Tesla increases the production rate of the Model 3 to 5000 per week. “This is when outside forces have the strongest motivation to stop us,” he added.

Now he's gonna get that promotion.

In the old days people would simply jump out of the window.

Look for China to produce a "knock off" Tesla, available IN QUANTITY in 12-18 months, and be MUCH cheaper than what Tesla sells them for.
With their slave labor cost pretty much ZERO, and the stolen technology/data, they will reverse engineer
it. The entire "super" China success has been built on the back of stealing other people's or governments ideas, patents etc, reverse engineering them and building their own, cheaper (and sometimes more DANGEROUS).
Betcha within 12-18 month, China will announce an electric vehicle that once the covers are removed, will share a lot of the technology of the Tesla, of course at a substantially reduced price. A-holes!

I need to come up with a good reason/excuse, for some of our failures.....
I KNOW, I'll pay off a fall guy and set up his family for life, that will distract the investors just enough.and cover my azz, AGAIN.

naw, he wouldn't do that ,would he?

Doubtful..there's too great of a risk of a scheme like that coming to light. Its much more likely that an entitled millennial manboy was to blame, or a Chinese spy.

Hello from China.

Not going to disagree with you at all.

But I'm not worried about them copying cars, I'm worried about them building planes.

Then your company books you on the cheapest flight, and its a ”People's Party 737”. What do you say? I refuse to work / deploy?

Sticky situation. And will be further exacerbated by the Chinese operator's mentality running them. Any crash would be nigh on impossible to bring to its true conclusion with party meddling etc.

Cars worry me much less.

Reminds me of history's dictators that whenever one of their ideas results in disaster, never accept responsibility, but make the claim that "they were plotting against me!" usually followed by mass executions, but I suspect this guy will just get fired.

@Knot Schure - People's Party 737, that just made my day
