Crimea was attempting to secede from Ukraine from the moment Ukraine first formed in 1991 ... and once the US-backed coup overthrew the government in 2014 and installed a virulently nationalist thug like Poroshenko, that desire became desperation. Lucky for them they succeeded -- as Poroshenko soon became known as the "Butcher of Donbass"
