Still pretty short sighted when it comes to working from home. If an employee's job can be done exclusively online, why force them to waste time commuting all week?
As long as their work gets done, it's has quite a few benefits (smaller office to pay for, certain types of people are happier, etc)...

That only mean your work is too simple, or redundant, or non material, or no humanly touch nor interaction required, which implies it could be soon replaced by AI.

Remote workers are going to figure out real quick, if they want to stay remote, they are going to be in a very big pool of employees that work for very little. And I just want to say I CALLED IT, remote work was not permanent and never will be.

Same deal with my current employer, I knew it was a matter of time before they will make a mandatory return to office day, and they did two weeks ago told anyone who lives within respectable driving distance to come to the office on Wednesday for "in-person experience, culture and collaboration."

Before that, they emphasized the "new way of working," with remote being primary for many, and the only people who showed up to the office were workers' roles that required to be in the office, like manufacturing support and onsite IT support. Then played with some language around meetings only hosted on Tuesday and Thursday. If the meeting is better facilitated in person, come to the office to do it remotely.

So they modified (rebranded) the "new way of working," and its a matter of time (I give it within six months) before they will add another day or two; plus, when people came into the office on Wednesday, they held meetings that were supposed to be Tuesday and Thursday, so I believe they will leverage that into making Tuesday and Thursday office while sanctifying Wednesday for culture and collaboration.

People might wonder what the reasoning behind it is. I assume they would communicate their decision why upper management made this move with facts like productivity is down, many people expressed negative emotions without seeing their peers in person, etc. Nope, just typical corporate talking points about it being good for our culture, that's it.

I believe with some rumors I heard from others: they paid millions for the new headquarters office and want people in it, plus the ongoing utility expense to maintain those deserted buildings. Rumors included squeezing out more productivity from employees.
