The takeaway: The old stereotype that games are mostly for younger people – and males – has once again been proved outdated. The Entertainment Software Association's (ESA) latest survey shows that the average age of respondents is 41, and the split between men and women is almost 50/50.

The ESA's latest Power of Play survey involved 24,216 participants from 21 countries across six continents. It covers several categories, from gamer demographics to reasons why people play games.

One of the highlighted findings is that the average age of respondents – all of whom were aged 16 and over at the time – is 41. Moreover, the gender split is 51% men and 48% women.

As for the respondents' top reasons for playing games, the most obvious one, to have fun, is the most common, named by 66% of respondents. In second place is stress relief/relaxation at 58%, which one presumes comes from those playing the likes of Anno 1800 rather than Elden Ring. Finally, keeping minds sharp and exercising brains was the third most common reason named (45%).

Another section of the survey looks at the benefits that playing games can bring. Most people (81%) said that they provide mental stimulation, and 80% said they provide stress relief. Other answers included providing an outlet for everyday challenges (72%), introducing people to new friends and relationships (71%), reducing anxiety (70%), and helping people feel less isolated or lonely by connecting them to others (64%).

It's noted that among gamers aged 16 to 35, 67% said they've met a close friend or partner through gaming. And almost half of US respondents said games improve their parent-child relationship – a contrast to the long-held claim that children often grow distant from their parents due to playing games.

There are some interesting answers in the category of what skills games can improve. Around three-quarters of respondents agree that creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork/collaboration can all be improved by gaming. More than half said games improved their real-world athletic skills, and many said games improved or influenced their education or career path.

Unsurprisingly, mobile devices are the most popular gaming platform across all demographics, which will likely bring debate over the definition of "gamer." Fifty-five percent of respondents said it was their favorite way of playing games. It's especially popular among those over 50 (61% in this age group said they play on mobile), while half of those under 35 said they game on these devices. Meanwhile, consoles and PCs are both played by 21% of participants.

Gaming has come along way is one way to put it. Not moving on is another way. I game. I also prefer 60's music, clothes, slang, etc. so not moving on isn't necessarily bad just don't get stuck in the past.

Could they show the difference of what men and women play.
Cause right now my wife is "gaming" on her Tablet and I'm on the Pc playing Dune.
Just talked to my mother who was playing mahjong on her laptop. And my grandma (rip) used to play solitaire on her computer.

I might me a bit nitpicky here.... But I don't count those as "gamers" even if they play games.

I don't count backgammon as a sport even if they show the world championship on Eurosport 3

I think you get my point.

True... many of these reports count as "gamers" people like my elderly mother who plays Bejeweled and Bejeweled clones on her phone. And my elderly father who plays Solitaire, Minesweeper and Mahjong on his laptop. Of course, they don't even know what "Elden Ring", "Anno 1800", "Minecraft", "Roblox", "PUBG", "Half Life" or "Doom" are.

Yeah, there are a lot of women and girls out there gaming, most hide the gender to avoid harassment. Image how some of these 30yr+ year olds living in their mom's basement would react if they knew they were regularly getting beat by women.
Agreed.
I could have been clearer. I know quite a few girls that play "real" games. But I think that percentage would be closer to 25% instead close to 50% as they say in that video.
And damn, the harassment women that women gets online is insane. I totally understand why they avoid talking ingame.

I mean when you lop off half the market by excluding anyone under 16, yeah I'd guess that's roughly accurate.

It could be more accurate to say the average gamer who is willing to waste time doing surveys.
The only survey that I have done relating to gaming is to occasionally click OK for the Steam survey.

Women: very casual non action games
Men: Shooters, sports and triple A stuff.

We are the force that keeps the video game industry alive. And that matters. So, if these studios weren't filled with brainless *****s, they would cater to the people who can support their work.

I used to play World of Warcraft and there was this saying:

"In WoW men are men, women are men, and girls are FBI agents".

While playing Wow, I have had 3 (wasn't sure as to 2 or 3, might be more) adult females and 2 MTF transsexuals hit on me. Your "50% females" is baloney.

My $ 0.02

P.S.: I never understood why they chose me and I am sure if you asked them now, they wouldn't know either as they were high at the time.

are we still crying about men in their mom's basement in 2025? Really?

Yeah, I think the definition of 'gamer' needs better defining. I suspect people that play casual games on their phone are being counted as gamers.

I was guilded with 6 women out of our force of 50 - none of them were wierd like your "women". We had a real life guildmeet and they were just ordinary people - not crazies :P

Def includes mobile games. A woman in my building must have dozens of games on her phone.
I laughed so hard. She was cool about it.

Playing Candy Crush while taking a dump does not a gamer make.
How else are they going to claim that gurls are gaimurz t0o!1!

These articles are total nonsense, full of lies and half truths, and an attack on real gamers, leading to speech regulation and scammers, liars and frauds such as SBI, Collective Shout (who fight the objectification of women while championing of Cuties), and even worse Blackrock, Vanguard and other initiatives, with the Finks stating that "Behaviour has to be enforced".

This is exactly what tyrannies such as The UK need, to attack men and call men losers who need to cater to women.

Wow, just wow... that’s a lot of paranoia packed into one comment.
No one’s “attacking men” by pointing out that women also play games, they literally make up nearly half of the gaming community today. That’s just data, not some global conspiracy by BlackRock or the UK government.

The irony is, the people screaming about “real gamers” are the ones doing the most damage to gaming culture. Gaming isn’t a boys only club anymore, it’s for anyone who picks up a controller. Maybe try accepting that instead of spiraling into political fan fiction.

I think it was always this way. When my father bought me a Gameboy, my sister got one too.
My father bought me a Game Gear, my sister got one too.
My mom got me a Turbo Graphyx 16, my Sister got a Virtual Boy.
My mom got me Super Scope 6, my sister got Mario Paint.

Not one bit surprised there are so many girl gamers. The question is how visible or vocal are they online as you assume everyone is a male till they open their mouth.

Given that mobile platforms are a popular way of gaming I'd say many of the ladies play mobile games and don't have to worry about online a-holes. That said we have a group of people that play games together (and have for a couple decades now). I am probably the oldest with the core of our group probably in the 35-45 age bracket. We do have a few ladies that play, most of them are spouses or GFs or friends of friends so no one gets obnoxious around them and if someone outside our group does, we let them know to dial it down.
