ok thank you very much for the help, appreciate it!! btw i went to a local computer store and the technician told me i should format the hard drive and back up the files i need etc. Its just gonna cost me $30 AUD for the whole thing.

may i ask when it comes to backing up, does it include like firefox settings i have, i.e saved bookmarks, passwords, url history etc.

i did it, reboot and it suddenly rebooted it self! i only see sidebar appearing back but the toolbar (explorer.exe) doesn't appear automatically like it should be, i had to type ctrl + alt + delete for window task manager and go to file > new task and in run type explorer.exe for my toolbar and object dock to appear, other than that, the icons, start menu doesnt show up at all unless i type it done. atm i'm running on safe mode because my computer rebooted itself without me doing anything...dang :(

Ok, before resorting to a reformat, I suggest you try doing a Windows repair as per this thread HERE.

See if that helps.

Regards Howard :)

thank you, i read it but it says i gotta boot from the CD (microsoft one) i don't have that CD. My computer HP only provided system recovery cd's(6) which includes xp home in it and if i insert the discs it would automatically format my hard drive and such. Had similar problem but i was lucky to backup the files i needed on a usb stick.
