External XP drive recognized but access denied in Windows 7

My laptop died on me after along battle to keep it alive, it was an XP OS. I have taken the Hard Drive out and installed it it a caddy which I have hooked to a new laptop. The new laptop is running Windows 7 which I have no experience of and whilst it recognises the drive I can't access the files on it due to permissions.

I understand that I need to change the file permissions as they are locked out by the user priviledges from the old XP account but I have no idea how to do this and, more importantly, if it's actually true!!

Have you tried resetting the owner on all the folders/files?

I have just tried that to no result but I did notice in the same area that I can change the permissions of users which worked. Thanks very much for your help as it directed me to the right location!!
