Files slow to open - Windows 7

I installed a new hard drive from a laptop of the exact same model/manufacturer, ever since my files (from documents to the actual folders in my computer) take a while (30sec-1 minute) to open.

I have tried a clean boot...still did it.
Defrag (crashed every time I ran it and re-started the computer).
Registry Clean-up (nothing found from CCleaner)
Anti-Virus (nothing found)

...and now we've reached the end of my limited knoweldge base. Any ideas?

maybe faulty HDD

Unfortunately, new HDD from certain manufacturers are proving to have a high initial fault rate.

First thing is check the HDD settings in the bios - make sure the transfer parameters are set to the highest your motherboard will support.

Second thing is reinstall the motherboard drivers.

Third thing is download the HDD manufacturers test suite and run it for several passes. This can take hours, sorry.

Basically, you are making sure all your settings for the HDD are correct, and if so, testing for a faulty HDD
