Getting my computer to reconize my mp3 player

I am trying to get my computer to reconize my mp3 player on My Computer so I can exchange music files. When I hook up the player through the USB port a dialog box pops up and says MTP Media Device and give options of Windows Media Player to transfer files but it doesn't reconize it. Neither in My Computer files. I have Windows XP. Any ideas?
