GFWL causing crashing, not updating

The current version, whatever it is, works fine. Aside from that I can't get online without updating. In-game updating just fills up a bar, then closes the program, opens a Windows installer and randomly fills up several times before closing and nothing else happens. Trying to manually install with the GFWL client is a disaster. It causes SFIV in particular to crash on startup, and I have to system restore to get anything to work again.
