Google is overhauling Chrome for better tab management and richer customization

Google announced that Chrome will be receiving some much needed improvements to tab management later this fall, as well as deeper customization options and an enhanced address bar.

In the coming weeks, Android users should see a new grid-style layout make its way to Chrome, a feature that iOS users already enjoy. The new grid layout should make selecting tabs easier, as well as offering a thumbnail preview of the tab. Moreover, users will be able to group tabs by dragging and dropping them atop one another.

Over on desktop, Chrome will get a cleaner layout for tabs with improved previews. By hovering over a tab, users will see both the page URL and a preview of the page. Additionally, users will be able to send tabs to another device, assuming you're signed in and have sync enabled.

Chrome will also get a refined address bar in both the Android and desktop versions. The new address bar will come with an auto-fill function that adapts in real time, depending on what's being typed.

Alongside the changes to tabs and the address bar, Chrome will get more options for colors and themes. There will be several new presets to choose from, as well as options for the tab page, toolbar and more.

Google hasn't given an exact timeline for these changes, only stating that they would come this fall.

I just want one new function. That's it. I would like a button to make it to where middle-mouse click on a link opens the new tab to the front. Every other browser has this as an option, but for Chrome I have to use the extension "Tabs To The Front" to make this happen.

Why can't they allow us to move the tabs to the bottom of the browser? I've had my tabs at the bottom on Firefox for 10+ years, because it's more convenient for me. I don't get why they won't allow this option or at least allow extensions to do it. Chrome will never be my main browser as long as this feature is missing.

Okay, well I'm sure they'll get right on it with all the demand for that feature

Yes, because I'm the ONLY one who wants that feature. *roll eyes*

If you want a grown up Chromium based browser that gives you back control, Vivaldi (link) is a million times more customizable than Chrome. Here's a screenshot of their tab page (link) and yes you can put tabs at the bottom.

Hi,
As most people are aware, there seems to be quite a bit of development right now on the web browser front. I still enjoy using chrome (beta version), for me anyway..I wish that the new feature's talked about in this article were available right now. Maybe in a future chrome canary release they will give user's a chance to check them out.
