I've noticed the problem for a few days now, and finally understood that the problem is malware related. Basically, most times I click a link on google search I am redirected to another page. The only way I can usually get around the problem is by copying and pasting the link or by clicking on it multiple times until things are properly directed. I know you've answered a lot of questions like these before, so I apologize... but I'd really like some help.

Since this problem has occurred, I've noticed overall poor system performance as well as Firefox locking up from time to time. Thank you ahead of time for all of your help. I hope these are the scan results that you need.

==== End Of File ===========================

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help with the redirect. Please read the following:

My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
    [o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
    [o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
    [o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.

If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.
=====================================
I'm checking the logs now and will be back shortly. But I notice you appears to be installing programs on 9/1/2011- as in today. Please don't any more new program while I'm helping you clean the system,

Thank you for your prompt reply and please take your time. What I had installed today were those associated with the problem; first I had run a Norton scan and installed an additional scan feature, the last was what this forum had suggested in regard to malwarebytes etc.

Not that I'm making excuses, just explaining if that helps with the process. Thank you again.

Edit: And I just realized I updated itunes, apologies in that regard.

Okay, there isn't much obvious in these logs regarding malware, so I will have you run 2 more scans.

Edit to add: Please disable the Norton Security Suite Registry and Norton_Power_Eraser while I'm helping you. It looks like these were recnet additions.

First, the Java is outdated. Please update to v6u27 now: Java Updates . Uninstall the Java v6u23 in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.
Note: Uncheck 'Install Yahoo Toolbar' on the download screen before you do the update.

  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
Note 3: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
Note 4: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

As an update on system performance, the redirection seems to be corrected/is getting there (as in thus far I've had no redirects). However, the firefox is still locking up from time to time.

I don't have to open the task manager to fix the problem, but it'll say "program not responding" and lock up for a moment or two.

Please download OTMovit by Old Timer and save to your desktop.

There is malware in the Java cache- that is because you have an outdated version of Java. Please update to v6u27 now: Java Updates Uninstall any earlier versions (Java(TM) 6 Update 23) in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.
Note: Uncheck 'Install Yahoo Toolbar' on the download screen before you do the update.

    Tell me something about AGTH other than what it is. I find the Win32/AGATH.A entry in the virus databases, but I can't isolate any thing about it that would cause the malware. Could this have been downloaded from a torrent site?

    Your system is in good shape. You control the 'speed' by what's running. Unnecessary processes that start on boot ant then run in the background can cause 'slow'. Not enough RAM can cause 'slow'. Running multiple resource intensive programs at the same time can cause 'slow.'

I have a question and follow up to yours before I continue in the next steps. One of the first things you asked me to do (Thursday night that is) was uninstall the older Java version and update it with the newest version. I had already done this as you asked. To check to make sure that it installed properly, I went into the uninstall a program under the control panel. The program list is telling me the only java I have on my system is update 27. This was the version I installed on 9/1. Should I uninstall that and reinstall it again? Sorry if this question seems stupid, but I just want to be sure.

AGTH I had downloaded directly from a website. There perhaps was a mediafire link to it, but it was not torrented, no. I can delete the file later if that's what we need. I've actually never gotten around to using it.

From time to time if I'm going to open a new tab in Firefox (I may have one or two others opened), it will run "Mozilla Firefox not responding" along the top toolbar. The program will lock up as if it's frozen. This generally will last no longer than a minute. I understand slow performance can be due to running multiple things at once, but this has never been a problem before. Likewise, it tends to do this as I'm typing more often than not.

And it's good to hear the system is in good shape. I have attempted to take off most processes that start up upon booting. Likewise, I'm running 4 gigs of ram. When it comes to the slow, save what I would normally expect, the lag has seemed to occur more often than not since this problem has started. Thank you again for your prompt reply.

Sorry for delay! All digitals down all day! I worked offline from the email replies;

"Mozilla Firefox not responding" along the top toolbar. The program will lock up as if it's frozen.
This is a server problem with the site you are trying to load in the tab.

Be sure to check if it's the red band at the top of Firefox saying "Firefox has prevented this page from redirecting'. That is a common occurrence when you use links. If you know it's a good site, click on 'Allow' on the right side.

Depending on what color scheme you're using and if there are images, sometimes users don't realize that FF wants your permission to load the page. Happens to me all the time.
=====================================
"only java I have on my system is update 27. This was the version I installed on 9/1. Should I uninstall that and reinstall it again"
No< leave that one- it the current version
======================================
"AGTH I had downloaded directly from a website. There perhaps was a mediafire link to it, but it was not torrented, no. I can delete the file later if that's what we need. I've actually never gotten around to using it.

Consider uninstalling it.

"the lag has seemed to occur more often than not since this problem has started."
Keep in mind that there are extra processes on the system now which may be slowing it down. When we have finished< I will have you remove all of the cleaning tools and logs.

Oh don't worry about the delay, my college classes started today so I can understand how busy things can be. Regardless, thank you for your reply! I apologize about all of the questions and I just wanted to be sure it was all ok.

Anyway, here is the log.

All processes killed

Thank you again for the help. Seriously

I notice you have the Firefox homepage set up for yahoo.com, but I don't see any default search set. You might want to look into that. As far as the 'program not responding' message, that is likely a server delay.

The system is clean. You've done a good job,:) There is still one outdated Java in the addons. Check that please in both sections- both addons now on system and addons previously on system> highlight Java v6u23> remove.

Since the redirect has been resolved, you can Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
    [o] Click START> then RUN
    [o] Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    [o] Click the CleanUp! button.
    [o] If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    [o]The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
    Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
    Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
  • Set a new, clean Restore Point
    [o] Click on Start> right click on Computer> Properties

Thank you so so very much for all of your help in this situation, I really truly appreciate it!

I did have one final question, though. I have disabled the u23 addon in my Firefox, but it gives me no option to uninstall/remove it. Is there anyway I can do this other than "disabling" it?

You're welcome!:)
If you logon to the Administrative account, you should get the option to uninstall.
