HDD and CD drive on same IDE

Is it possible to run both a hard drive and a cd drive off the same IDE cable, i have some ancient parts that dont have Sata and i dont really want to have to buy a new one. My motherboard only has 1 ide slot so i'v got no choice to run both off the same one

can you give me a quick run through on setting it up because i keep getting an error message saying that it can't detect a boot device

A standard IDE cable has three colors: Blue, Black and Grey. The blue portions is connected to your motherboard, the black is the master and should connect to your hard drive. The grey is for slave so connect that to your cd-rom. Also set your hard drive as MASTER but adjusting the small pins on the back of the hard drive and do the same to your cd-rom by setting that as the SLAVE.
