Help needed, no sound

Hello, I hope someone from here can help me since I'm a dummy when it comes to sound-problems. To get in medias res immediately:
I have just installed the 'AVI Movie Player' on my PC. So far, so good. But now, somehow, there does no sound come out of my speakers anymore. Not at all, not only when I'm playing the AVI player! I also plugged in my headphones but still, all I hear is the same old murmur. Anyone got an idea?

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Click the + sign next to "Sound, Video and game controllers" and make sure there aren't any yellow or red icons next to any of the items in that menu. Do you see a "speaker" icon indicating "volume" next to the date at the bottom right of your screen? If not, you should re-install your sound drivers from your motherboard CD. If you don't have this CD, you can get the drivers online from the manufacturer website.
