Here's how to reserve a Tesla Model 3 and when to expect delivery

  1. Tesla's first electric vehicle for the masses is set to make its debut later this month. When the Model 3 finally does break cover, it will no doubt be met by many with the "shut up and take my money" mentality. This is how Tesla plans to handle reservations and the eventual rollout that'll begin in late 2017.

Tesla will open reservations for the Model 3 beginning March 31 worldwide. Perspective buyers in the US will need to pluck down $1,000 to hold their spot (deposit amounts vary by region and can be found by clicking here). The company notes that deposits are fully refundable and can even be put toward the purchase of a Model S or Model X.

Interested parties can make a reservation in one of two ways.

The first, which Tesla says will result in a better spot in the queue, is to visit your local Tesla store when it opens on March 31. Conversely, you can wait until the live event kicks off that evening then visit Tesla's website to make your reservation. I'd personally advise against the second option as A) it will put you further back in the queue and B) Tesla's site will likely be flooded with traffic from the event.

Tesla says there will be a different queue for each region and predictably, those who already own a Model S or Model X will get priority in each region.

When production gets under way, Tesla will begin deliveries in North America starting on the West Coast and moving east. As production ramps up, Model 3 buyers in Europe, APAC and right-hand drive markets will begin taking deliveries. Tesla says it's not possible to ship to all regions simultaneously due to varying regional regulations. Staggered deliveries also allow the company to provide the best possible customer experience, we're told.

The Model 3 will be unveiled at a media event on March 31 at Tesla's design studio in Hawthorne, California. The event gets started at 8:30 pm PDT and will be livestreamed over the Internet.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with me. I expect to be able to walk into a car dealer, sign on the dotted line, and drive the damned thing home.

I guess all this suspense is supposed to create desire, and make you feel "special" Y-O-U, have a reservation! Y-O-U have managed to co-opt yourself a better place in the "queue". Y-O-U re elite! One of these days you might actually become a Tesla owner. How special is that?

Don't forget to mind your manners and be respectful. else Musk-o might get his pantyies in a bunch sand refuse to sell you one of his car.

But I think your crowning achievement, is being as self important as one of the dupes who stand out in the rain for three day and nights, to get a new iPhone on release day. Veritably, a puppy that doesn't need a leash.
