How do I connect with a router?

Ok so i recently got xbox live then i find out my DSL modem that i had was too old to use. SO i goto walmart and buy a 5-port network Hub and try that. I still get the same error while trying to connect to xbox live. It says that there was a problem with my IP adress. Can anyone help me please?

I'm not exactly sure me having PS's all the time, but wouldn't you have to go to settings on the dashboard and see if it detects the router either wireless or with a wire.
It would be best to connect with a wire first and then configure it to connect to the router.

Take the hub back -- you got the wrong kind of device -- you need a ROUTER.
A router has DHCP support while the hub does not. Without DHCP, you're creating
mutliple devices with the same IP address, which is an error.
