How many PCs do you own?

Around 23 functional laptops 3 desktops, but I only use the laptops. I use a rotation of around 4-5 devices as my main systems. My main laptop is from around 2008 would have run a price tag of $3500 back then but I upgraded it over time so only have around $1700 total sunk into it.

The more I use a PC, the more I cannot see giving it up. There is so much you can do with a PC these days. We’re way beyond it being nothing more than a work machine and a home Internet browsing, email checking, online gaming machine. Yes, those things are still things the PC can do and do well; however, it can do so much more. It can literally be the ultimate peripheral device at the center of your entertainment world. You can watch DVDs, Blu Rays, digital downloads, etc. You can store or stream content and even use it as a DVR with the right software. You can set up your own content server for music, movies, and more, stream it to any PC or compatible device in your house, and you can even stream your own content over the Internet to wherever you are located with programs like Plex. It can be your own personal Netflix. It can do all of this on top of all the things it has been good at doing since the PC explosion of the past couple of decades. You can still get a top notch gaming experience. You can still web surf, check email, and be productive; however, now you can do all of this from your living room couch on your big screen TV with a phone or tablet acting as the ultimate remote control. So yeah, maybe I am a bit of a PC fanboi, but it’s hard not to be when you begin to realize how much you can do with a PC that no other peripheral can really offer. It may be the ultimate utility peripheral in any home if used to its full potential.

Ok, to answer the question, I currently have 4 PCs of my own that I use. I have a primary gaming PC in my room. I have a HTPC in the family room which everyone uses including me (the kids most of all since they have controllers and play Steam games on it). I use XMBC (Kodi) on the HTPC to stream movies stored on the server. Plus it is logged into Netflix. This is a natural segue way into the next PC. I have one that is dedicated to server duty: files, movies, music, etc. I have automated backups running that cache data to the server. I rarely have to do anything to the server as it is dedicated and running the apps I want it to run. It doesn’t get used for anything else. I also have a laptop that I use when on the go. These are just the main PCs that I actually use. There are two more set up for other members of the family to use which I do not interact with much other than performing IT duties occasionally. The total is 6 PCs in the house.

So for me, rather than cutting down on PCs, I have actually increased the number of PCs I use over the years. I can’t see that ever changing. I still have my iPhone, and while I do not have any tablets yet, I do plan to get one or more in the future. However, these will be in addition to the many PCs I have. I cannot see them replacing them. PCs are just too useful for too many things. Other peripheral devices are great for certain things, but the PC can do those things and so much more.

And btw, many of these PCs are older PCs from the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad era. My primary gaming PC is the exception. It’s an i7 with 16 Gigs of Ram. I generally do not throw away older PCs. I just repurpose them, so it’s not like you have to spend a ton of money to have multiple useful PCs. Older PCs are quite capable of running many of the programs you want to run. There are still many games that play just fine on an old dual core AMD CPU with a GTX 275 in it. Granted, the settings may need adjusting, and you’re not playing the newest games; but it makes for a great console replacement PC. If you don’t have old PC hardware laying around, you can often pick used hardware up for cheap on Ebay, Craigslist, etc. You can also keep old hardware from the upgrades you perform for friends and family (if you do that sort of thing). Every PC doesn’t have to be a new PC. You just have to figure out what you want it to be able to do and build accordingly.
