How to set up an SDD

Hi people,

I have just bought a computer and I was looking into setting up a Solid Disk Drive as my boot drive as I have heard this helps speed up things a lot, it this true?

How easy is it to add in a SDD? I have searched on the forums but I can't find anyware that actually shows you how. I think you might need to set up a "Raid configuration"???

Any help would be great!!

Secure it in your case, plug in the power, connect it to the motherboard, install the OS. You don't need any sort of RAID array unless you know what you're doing.

It's the same as setting up a normal hard drive, videos of which I am sure you can find on youtube.

1). Plug it in.
2). Install OS.
3). Enable TRIM support (if necessary, I think it is on by default, and only applies to w7 if I remember).
No you don't need a RAID, but make sure the SSD you are buying is a worthy one.

Yeh sorry I had a mis-type, appears it is easier than I though,,,, I did mean keep my current hard drive and use the SSD aswell at the same time?

Is that possible?

Yes.
Exact same steps as above...unless you'd like to transfer your old OS to your new drive.

I think that I get the instalation disks with my computer, so I think I would I could re install windows and set it to the SSD so that windows runs faster?

Obviously if I was doing this I wouldnt mind loosing everything on the memory.

Yeah sure you can reinstall on the SSD and use your old hdd for storage.
It won't actually delete everything...though it is best that you do to avoid having two copies of windows. Preferably you would install all your important or slow programs on the ssd to.
What ssd are you getting out of curiosity?

Im not getting a SSD at the moment, I thought about getting one with the PC i just bought (see my other threads for info... all ive been goin on about lol) but i decided against it and thought id buy a higher spec SSD when the prices lowered and install it myself so I get some experience with PC hardware for the future

Good to see this technology coming back. Back in the late 80's one Tandy (RadioShack) Computers (desktop) had no HDD it had use solid state instead
