Infinite repair cycle

My computer is on an infinite reboot/ repair cycle. It searches for problems and under "view problem details" it says that i have a corrupt registry. It is a inspiron 1525 laptop, and it was running vista home premium. I have no idea what brought this on, after watching a DVD i closed the lid and since then, i don't know what to do or how to fix it. Right now i am running off an ubuntu live cd. I have tried going too a previous backup with system restore, but to no avail. It goes to the same repair mode. I have also tried safe mode. I have done everything but a complete factory restore and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction..

Use the Ubuntu cd to back up all of the files that you need. I would do the factory restoration. That is the best way to get your computer running like new again.
