In brief: Intel's 12th-gen processors are widely expected to be faster, hotter, and more expensive than their predecessors. How much more expensive will be key to Intel's success in persuading consumers to upgrade. A recent listing at a reputable US vendor suggests the price premium over Rocket Lake will be minor.

As we get closer to the official Alder Lake-S reveal, more hints about pricing are popping up online. The latest comes from US retailer Provantage (thanks, @harukaze5719), and paints a relatively positive picture for Intel's 12th generation processors.

Earlier this week, Provantage briefly accepted pre-orders for some Alder Lake CPUs, even though we're weeks away from their official release. According to the vendor's list pricing, the new CPUs won't be significantly more expensive than their Rocket Lake counterparts. That is, if you manage to place an order before scalpers start sending their bots to work.

Model Boxed Price (w/o VAT) Tray Price (w/o VAT) Cores/Threads L3 Cache Size
Core i9-12900K $604.89 $605.92 16/24 30MB
Core i7-12900KF $578.13 $578.49 16/24 30MB
Core i7-12700K $422.17 $420.26 12/20 25MB
Core i7-12700KF $395.61 $392.26 12/20 25MB
Core i5-12600K $288.77 $283.59 10/16 16MB
Core i5-12600KF $261.77 $263.15 10/16 16MB

It looks like the Core i9-12900K and Core i9-12900KF hybrid CPUs will set you back $604.89 and $578.13, respectively. That's for the boxed models, but it appears that tray pricing is only a few dollars less. This is interesting, because Intel is said to debut redesigned "Laminar" stock coolers with the new CPUs that should perform close to AMD's Wraith series.

These prices are lower than those revealed in a separate leak. At the same time, the listed Alder Lake-S CPUs still carry a noticeable premium compared to the street prices of Rocket Lake equivalents. This is to be expected due to the new hybrid design and supposedly better performance-per-watt of Intel's 12th generation CPUs.

At $288.77 and $261.77, the Core i5-12600K and Core i5-12600KF look quite attractive for people who want to upgrade their aging PC or build a new one without breaking the bank. If performance is also on point when compared to the Core i5-11600K or AMD's Ryzen R5 5600X, the new CPUs might have a chance at slowing AMD's gains in the gamer/enthusiast processor space.

Intel's 12th generation CPUs may turn out to be cheaper than expected, thanks to better offerings from AMD

Fixed that title a little.

Funny how that is never mentioned, neither the fact that Intel raped us the customers, when they didnt had competition.

If it is one company that needs to stop getting free passes from these sites is this one.

I don’t really care who makes my CPU but I would love to see Intel beat AMD again for the sake of competition. Also it would be good to see the AMD fanboys crying.

I can already predict the excuses they are going to come out with. Like “Ryzen offers 16 full cores” or “Ryzen is 7nm and Intel is 10nm” or the most laughable one “AMD is more ethical than Intel” or something along those lines.

It’s a commodity and you should buy what benches best for the money. If you don’t do that then you’re probably irrationally emotionally attached to a big American corporation and that’s pretty sad.

It would be a nice surprise if Intel‘s latest CPU on their newest node turns out to be reasonably priced.

It will also be interesting what the rest of the platform costs.

Look at the prices listed in the article, they are beyond good!

But its a bait and switch trap.

Stop AMD from getting money, AMD dies, Intel ramps up the prices again.

And as a kicker, they bring us back to the 4 core hell they kept us, as punishment for buying AMD!

Cant make that stuff up! lol

Why would any1, minus fanbois, buy a 500W real TDP space-heater Intel CPU vs a more technologically advanced, more friendly to the environment and more energy efficient AMD CPU?

Is it b/c the new Intel CPU's will be gettin' 5 FPS more in those triple A games you enjoy testing at 1080P and 25 FPS more at 720P?

 That chart is interesting. So, there are not going to be 2 threads per core? Seems like sIntel is playing their manipulative marketing games again and is going to be trying to convince everyone that they are better "because sIntel." 🤣 What else is sIntel not telling us?

I don't see any reason to jump on the sIntel bandwagon again even for a supposed price advantage. As I see it, I would be paying them for my indentured servitude to them.

If Alderlake`s i7 matches or is slightly better than Rocketlake`s i9, 422 bucks will be quite a deal. Can`t wait for the benchmarks!

Tbh, I don‘t think Intel can afford to sell their CPU too cheap. Look at what happened to their server and mobile asp / margins.

Then again, with all that sweet government money they‘ll get, maybe they will try to muscle AMD out of the market. Worst case (if caught) they‘ll have to pay another ridiculously low fine.

Actually, those prices should tell you that:

A- They were really raping us, price wise and even though they are very low, they could still be making a profit, confirm the raping.

B- Go big, go wild, go illegal and sell bellow cost, just to kill AMD and then go back to raping us, when AMD is done.

Couldn’t care less about shiny AAA games or esports games. What I care about is single core performance for my single thread bottlenecked flight simulators and oddball strategy/building games so that I can at least maintain a constant 60/120fps depending on the game.

Lmao, you know you’re a fanboy when you complain about a manufacturer having low prices because it hurts the brand you love.

How dare Intel have lower prices!

Interesting. From a marketing perspective, Intel's new big core/little core cpu tech is not directly comparable to AMD. So how do you price them?

The goal in marketing is to offer the consumer better performance, at a lower cost.

Voila! The i5-2600 and i7-12700 are priced just under the 5600x and 5800x. This probably means they will perform slightly better.

Core i7-12700KF $395.61 12/20 vs Ryzen 7 5800x 8/16 $399.99
Core i5-12600K $288.77 10/16 vs Ryzen 5 5600x 6/12 $299.99

On the other hand, the Core i9-12900K is priced WAY below the 5950x, so we can assume its performance will be less.

i9-12900K $604.89 16/24 vs 5950x 16/16 $749.99

However, it looks bad from a technical perspective if Intel needs 50% more cores to beat AMD.

In this world it is also about doing the right thing. Intel constantly plays dirty games to sell its CPUs and rip customers off at the end of the day.
Intel pricing these chips lower mean that they won't really compete with AMD and Intel is going to spend its illegal government cash to try to push AMD's marketshare down.

Intel went from record profits to government subsidy in the same year. Meanwhile AMD had to sell its own HQ some years back to pay for engineering. If that isn't corruption; I don't know what is.

You mentioned before that you don't care who makes your CPU; but you have Intel now and are hoping Intel wins again. This to me looks like you actually do care who it is. You love Intel and want it to be Intel. Therefore you are "holding out" until you can justify another Intel purchase.
This is what is called fanboyism.

I happen to own 18+ computers, some are Intel and others are AMD. I buy what makes sense depending on availability and performance and price. However these days Intel is just behind and it is hard to justify purchasing anything Intel even if it is a lower price. Since usually the motherboard is more expensive, or it uses alot more power and requires a more expensive cooler. So the lower prices on Intel chips are typically an illusion.
