I updated internet explorer 7 and now I can't open it. I patched it from the windows update site and it doesn't open for anything. Can someone plzz help me? TY

What happens when you try to open it? Do you get an error message? What is it?

Try doing a System Restore to day before you did the update.

Hi,

Download FileMon (completely free and legal) from Sysinternals. Run FileMon first and then open IE7. If this is a file issue (IE 7 can't find a DLL or something) FileMon will show it to you. You can then either do a fresh install of IE7 or you can get the missing files from somebody else with IE7.

I am suggesting this because I had a similar problem with IE 5 years ago. I sued FileMon, saw it was looking for and failing to find a DLL. I grabbed that same DLL off my Mom's computer and placed it in the directories that FileMon said IE 5 was checking. I started IE 5 and it worked.

Good Luck,

Adrian

Hopefully we will get some answer about the appearance of an error message. Or a system Restore will remove the update and we will be able to determine just what the culprit it.

By the way, FileMon and RegMon are now called Process Monitor. I am always reluctant to install software if a problem can be handled from within the operating system itself.

when I try to open internet explorer I get a flash of white and that's it.
Tried system restore- didn't work
tried reinstall- didn't work

I'll give this process monitor a try and get back to you guys.

Tried proces moniyor but, have no clue what I'm looking for. can you help me?

I suggest you find the Error in the Event Viewer that corresponds to the time when IE flashes and closes:

Start> Run> type in eventvwr
Do this on each the System and the Applications logs:
1. Click to open the log>
2. Look for the Error>
3 .Right click on the Error> Properties>
4. Click on Copy button, top right, below the down arrow
5. Paste here (Ctrl V)

Please ignore Warning and Information Events. You do not need to include the lines of code-if any-that appear in the box below the Description. Please do not paste the entire Event log.

I don't know what to tell you to look for in the Process monitor. That would not have been my choice.

This is what I found in the system log. There were no errors in the application logs just warnings and information events.

There are actually three sets of logs:
System
Applications
Security

Event 680, Event 529: Failure Audit> Authentication
(Error code 0xC000006A) - According to Microsoft Windows XP attempts a limited logon for each account that is displayed on the Welcome screen to determine whether to prompt the user for a password. An attempted logon is logged for each account displayed. To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. To prevent these events from being logged, disable the Welcome screen and use the classic logon screen or turn off auditing of logon events. Source: EventID.net
To resolve, follow this:
Failure Events Are Logged When the Welcome Screen Is Enabled
