Highly anticipated: The iPhone Fold has been the subject of widespread speculation in recent months, with some reports suggesting it could carry a significant premium over its Android counterparts. A new leak, however, claims that the device will be priced much more competitively, aligning it with similar offerings from Samsung and Google.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed that Apple will price its first foldable iPhone at "roughly $2,000," much lower than previously rumored. If Gurman's prediction holds, the iPhone Fold would match the pricing of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB model. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slightly cheaper, starting at $1,799.

Earlier rumors from multiple sources suggested substantially higher prices, fueling speculation that the iPhone Fold could face the same commercial struggles as the Vision Pro. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had projected a price between $2,000 and $2,500, while Fubon Research's Arthur Liao anticipated a base price of $2,399. Earlier this month, tipster Instant Digital suggested a $2,325 starting price.

If Gurman's sources are correct, this is welcome news not just for Apple fans anticipating the iPhone Fold, but for all foldable enthusiasts who feared that an exorbitantly priced Apple device could push up prices across the segment, making folding smartphones even less affordable.

Meanwhile, a new report from The Bell appears to reveal some key specifications for the iPhone Fold. According to the publication, the device will ship with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM – the same as the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max – with Samsung supplying the memory chips, as it does for the iPhone 17 series.

The iPhone Fold is expected to offer three storage options: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. While the iPhone 17 Pro Max includes a 2TB variant, that option will reportedly not be available for the Fold. NAND flash supply remains unclear, though it could come from a combination of Micron, Samsung, Kioxia, and SK Hynix, all of whom provide storage for the iPhone 17 lineup.

This one is gonna be a disaster. The Samsung's Fold is in the 7th generation, so now they have a great product. First gen of a foldable is gonna suck, no matter who makes it.

Yup, like many others, avoiding this first-gen product like the plague.

Sure, they can improve faster than Samsung, due to Samsung (and Google to a small degree) doing most of the R&D work for Apple (..again), but I’d love to see what the third/fourth-gen iPhone Fold looks like more than the first.

And you can 100% bet all of these "price leaks" are to see how the market reacts to a 2400 dollar price, or a 2000 dollar price.
If you get a LOT of negative reactions to the 2400 dollar price, you can bet Apple will try and take a hit on the first gen to get market share and or cut some final corners to bring the price down but keep the profit percentage up.

I am curious to see if they can offer a better screen/tech that prevents creases. They had time to learn, they should be able to offer the best display that does not develop usual problems

Yes and no. Not every first gen product will be bad. It really depends on how much effort you put into QC and design. For instance, if you look at Apple's M1 MacBook Air, it was an instant hit.

To me, I will avoid any foldable phones because the folding hinge and screen are additional points of failure. I tried a foldable phone from Samsung a couple of years back and it lasted no more than 15 months before the internal screen failed because something is wrong with the hinge. The pre-applied screen protector will also come out where the crease is, which is more distracting than the crease itself.

Well... Normally I'd agree, but just the same, Apple will have had 7 gens of Folds for their engineers to dissect in their labs and about as many years to copy, plan and work on it, so it won't be a disaster on technicalities, but if anything, just because of the Apple BS they decide to scam you on to sell you its improved successors later.

Nah, this is exactly what Apple is famous for. Let the tech mature a bit and then sweep in with an implementation that's more polished than the competition. Then the competition catches up and competes on price and eventually some sort of equilibrium is reached.
So maybe in another 2 or 3 years foldables will be a little bit more mainstream. Although afaik none of the problems (crease, delicate hinges) has been solved so it will mostly come down to making it more useful in software compared to Android.

Shame LG left the market, at least their rollable display has much less of a crease problem.

Apple has always been late to most products yet they have had a lot of success most of the times.

Yes, because they let other companies (Samsung, Google, LG, etc.) do the heavy lifting that is R&D. They wait until the competition's product goes through several iterations of improvements. Then Apple basically copies them, makes some slight improvements, then pretends they invented it. This playbook was written by their late turtleneck wearing düsh.
