jury orders samsung pay million apple patent case samsung court jury

Despite getting the nod from the jury, it was Apple that ultimately came up short in its latest patent dispute with rival Samsung. After hearing evidence from both sides for nearly a month and deliberating for three days, the four man and four woman jury found Samsung infringed on two of the four patents that were considered in the case

Jurors awarded the Cupertino-based company $119.6 million in damages – a far cry from the $2.2 billion they were seeking and far less than the $930 million awarded in an earlier trial that took place in the same courtroom.

A spokesperson for Apple said the ruling reinforces their belief that Samsung willfully stole their ideas and copied their products.

It wasn’t a clear-cut victory for Apple, however, as the jury also ruled that Samsung had one of their patents infringed upon. The award for that ruling is $158,400.

Some are calling the overall ruling a victory for Samsung. Brian Love, assistant professor at Santa Clara University School of Law, said the verdict amounts to less than 10 percent of the total amount Apple was seeking and probably doesn’t surpass by too much the amount they paid their legal team.

He added that Apple launched this litigation campaign years ago in an effort to slow the rise of Android phone manufacturers. So far, however, they’ve failed to do so and this ruling won’t bring them any closer to that goal.

People still BUY overpriced fanboi apple products? lol.

I thought they were given away free by people upgrading to Windows Phones.

Even if Samsung infringed / infringes on Apple patents, it is still in their benefit to do so. The financial gains and the a more level playing field have proven to be far more then the "small" amount awarded by the courts to apple.

Sure they knew Apple would sue them, and they are happy to let it drag through the courts and continue to make money from it.

It's like the UPS trucks getting a parking ticket, it's the cost of business.

This patent should have not been awarded in the first place to any company...
1) 5,946,647, the "quick links" patent
2) 8,046,721, the "slide to unlock" patent;
3) 8,074,172, a word suggestion typing aid patent

1) err website hyperlink?
2) a door van?
3) T9 dictionary???

They actually... well uhm... they "beat 'em"!

PS: Wait for it... "patent-troll" incomming.
Did they? I'm not so sure. Whatever it was that Samsung copied probably made them a lot more money than the chump change they've been ordered to pay. I think everyone is getting sick and tired of the spats between the two. I know I am.

I'm glad that people are finally realizing that Samsung blatantly copies apple. Before that was "they never copies apple blah blah...apple is patent trolling (their patents, THAT THEY OWN)" Now the argument is, "well they copied but, that's the price of business". It's the fans on both sides that makes this entertaining.

It takes two to tango :)

Apple is using the flaws of the system , and probably has a few senators and congressmens on their paycheck . Most of Apple so called innovation are just ideas on paper or they bought smaller companies who already had the technology . USA Patent System should give patents only on proven technology , not just some sketches and a few ides written beside it .
If you guys remember GSM years , they where not many patent infringements regarding the shape , functionality or what a button does .
Once Apple got in to the game everything went downhill .
