LaCie has announced two new external storage solutions aimed at delivering fast transfer speeds and ample capacity in a small package. The portable 2.5-inch LaCie Rikiki and the 3.5-inch LaCie Minimus for desktops are both encased in a sturdy brushed aluminum shell for an elegant look, as well as improved durability and heat dissipation, and have been updated with USB 3.0 connectivity to provide a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 5Gb/s.

The two devices are compatible with Mac and Windows systems and come bundled with 10GB of Wuala online backup storage so you can securely store and share files online. The manufacturer is also throwing in its LaCie Software Suite to make it easy to set the drives up and start local backups to protect data.

Despite its small profile (2.9 x 4.6 x 0.52 inches) the LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 will reportedly come in 500GB and 1TB capacities, though for the time being only the former is listed for $100. The Lacie Minimus USB 3.0 on the other hand measures 4.4 x 1.2 x 6.8 inches, is powered externally, and comes in a single 1TB capacity for $130. Both are backwards compatible with the older USB 2.0 interface, of course, and are backed by a 2-year limited warranty.
