Laptop receives internet but router won't

I live at an apartment complex where the internet is provided.

When I plug the Ethernet cable from the wall into my laptop or xbox, I can access the internet just fine. However,
when I plug the Ethernet cable into a standard router, I cannot get any internet through the wifi.

I've tried two different routers and nothing has worked. Any thoughts or suggestions?

What's the make/model of your router? Did you install the router software and set up the router?

If the apartment provides Internet, then it is most likely a slot on their router. Your best bet is to plug the wall directly to one of the LAN slots, not the WAN.

To configure your own WiFi:
  • wire your router to the PC and nothing else
  • login using the default router address, admin & password
  • DISABLE the DHCP support
  • then setup the wifi
  • save these changes
now run a cable from the wall to any LAN slot on your router.
