Laptop won't turn on/seems like it's not charging

I have a HP Pavillon dv6000 and it wont turn on. I have replace the battery and the ac power supply cord. When I press the power button, all the lights turn on as if it wants to start and then they all go off except the charge light. I thought it had something to do with the battery because I didn't follow the recommendations of charging for 4 hrs and then letting it completely drain and recharging. Need help?

Hi.

I'm no expert but an engineer told me (re another m/c) that there may be some protection hardware acting. An obvious example would be if the fan over the processor failed, it would overheat and burn up quite quickly. So the power is cut to stop that happening.
