LastPass, one of the most popular password managers available, has had its first major overhaul since the company was acquired by LogMeIn last year. Version 4.0 introduces some new features and a revamped design that’s more pleasing to the eye and easier to navigate.

LastPass version 4.0 brings a redesigned password vault, browser extension menus, and a web vault for the website. The new look includes bigger website icons, simpler navigation, and bolder colors. Any users who prefer the old design can quickly switch between this new grid view and the previous list view – although this option will only be available for the next several months.

Two big new features have been introduced with this update. The first, called Emergency Access, lets you grant someone – such as family or friends – access to your account during emergencies. You’re able to set how long a waiting period is required before a designated person gets access to your vault, and you’re able to decline any requests during this time, should you wish.

The second major feature is the new sharing center, which makes LastPass’ existing sharing tools much simpler. Now, separate tabs are used for managing and reviewing shared items, shared folders (for premium and enterprise members), and items currently shared by others. Each tab lets you see who has access to which passwords or notes, share new items, or remove someone’s access at any time. It’s also possible to check if someone has received the password you shared with them and remind them if they haven’t accepted it.

Finally, Version 4.0 brings a host of tweaks that should improve security, speed, and general performance. LastPass 4.0 is available as a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux. Supported browser extensions include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera.
