Macrum Reflect Free Backup

When trying to run a system image backup with the old windows 7 it said it would require 43GB. But did not work
So I'm using Macrum Reflect Free, when finished file explorer says the file is 17+GB. Is this normal???
Is there any way to see what is actually in the backup file from Macrum???
