Mic problems, Can hear self but not record

I've been searching for a few hours now and I am failing to find anything to help solve this problem.

I have just got a new headset that I wanted to use for gaming and other things. I have tested it and it works fine on my girlfriends laptop.

When I plug it into my computer I can hear myself though the computer speakers but if I try to record or use the microphone in conjunction with any other application it does not work.

I have reinstalled the correct drivers for my motherboard onboard sound and ensured that my default imput was set to microphone in sound settings. When using the test hardware feature in sound settings it acts as though there is no microphone at all.

-when recording I get nothing but white noise
- The mic works I can hear myself though speakers and on other computers
- correct drivers are installed.

If anyone can help, please do.

Thanks

PS I am running Windows XP SP2

If you haven't kept up with keeping XP updated, go to Windows Update and download and install XP's Service Pack 3. This may help with your microphone issues
