If more houses had solar panels and battery backups, most of the world's energy concerns would go away completely.

For example: America is currently starving Cubans to death disallowing them access to Iranian oil. Once they form closer ties with China, countries that find themselves opposed to America's racist sanctions will have access to clean, renewable solar energy, battery backupos and electric cars. Same for Africa and South America.

I wouldn't mind having a battery backup for my properties but right now the tech is expensive and best in new constructions.

AFAIK no US utility charges monthly fees for home solar or backup of any kind. If anything they're happy get that load off the grid (at the expense of some engineering to support connection).
