Microsoft will make Cortana mandatory in Anniversary Update

And I'll do the best I can to remove and disable it!

Edit:
... learning your typing inputs.

I dunno, doesnt seem all that mandatory...

yup, and if I'm not mistaken, learning typing inputs is pretty much the definition of a keylogger. Lovely way for Microsoft to help those trying to get your info. Instead of having to trick you into installing malicious code/software, all they have to do is gain access to Cortana's "memory" of what you type. Be on the lookout for a big zero day in the near future.

So users must now agree to give cortana unmitigated access to their PC if they want to use basic functions like search? Yeah, that disclaimer about cortana needing access to a laundry list of your data and sensors isn't worrying....

I'm happy I stuck to windows 7. Microsoft is so far out of touch with their customer base it's not even funny. At the rate they are going they are going to keep making their OS more and more like a mobile OS with all the negative data sharing that comes with it. Microsoft should know that businesses and their average desktop users don't want that crap. It's funny that a company doesn't understand the reason for it's own success.
I think businesses can still get out through Group Policy settings.

I think businesses can still get out through Group Policy settings.

Well any business with a capable IT department should be able to get around it. The problem is that many small to medium size business don't and not everyone has a IT guy handy to do a quick job for little to no pay.

What is the number one searched term for bing? Google.

What is the number one downloaded program on IE? Chrome.

Well at least for me lol. Just went to ten hoping it would ask me, what drive do you want to install this on? Nope, now windows 7 is gone. But I will revive it eventually and install it on my 2nd ssd.

If they are going to force Cortana, Edge, and Bing on people then I will inform all of my customers to avoid W10 like the black plague.

So this is sort of crossing a line too fast and too far after pushing everyone off their previous operating systems.

Like everyone else, I use Chrome. I never want Edge to open on my system.

Like everyone else I use Google for searches. I never want Bing to have any information about me or my searches.

The idea that I would have to violate both of these preferences just so I can continue to use a basic search function for local files is very nearly enough to turn Microsoft, for me at least, into a disk image I use to run games while everything else gets done on Linux.

I honestly wonder what they are thinking with this? Do they imagine that people are not going to notice they are being strong armed off their preferred solutions to inferior Microsoft products?

Been needing an excuse to load up a current Linux build. Bring on this abomination and let's be done with the age of Microsoft already.

If you read the Bible, you will see that ALL governments around the world will have every piece of info on you in no time. This is how they control the population - forcing things on you, taking things away. Eventually, they will have all the old people, the disabled people, the "rebels" for lack of a better word put in places where they will never escape from saying it is for their own good. You are now forced to carry an ID with you at all times; you are now forced to buy the foods that the gov't wants you to buy (SNAP); you are now forced to work 2 and 3 jobs because of low pay; you are now forced to pay more taxes than the rich --- get my drift? It's all in the Bible. If you don't want to read it, just listen to people who do and be warned. We are NOT nuts, we have our eyes and ears open and our mouths shut at the proper times. Yes, soon freedom of speech will be taken, freedom of the press is already gone. Ok you say I am a religious nut? Wait and see who is right!

Funny, I remember reading quite a bit in the Bible, and I don't ever recall it saying that Cortana will be the downfall of man in the end times. I also don't recall the Bible having any verses in it that say the government will know all about you. And I 100% sure the Bible doesn't say "In the end times, man must have 2 or 3 jobs to support a family"...where do you get this idiocy that you're spouting from? Please, by all means, since you are so well versed in the Bible, point me to the Chapters and Verses dealing with these topics you are talking about. And don't forget to give me the version of the Bible you are getting this rhetoric from as well.

While Microsoft is pushing the globalists agenda, thankfully, we may have another option. https://www.reactos.org/. A group of programmers who are building a community OS much in the same vein as Linux, but able to run Windows applications. I've yet to try it, but will set aside a computer to try it out. I hope it turns out to be what it promises to be.

I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10 through Microsoft trickery which not only installed this unwanted update but cleaned several software packages from my system, like Media Center, which I could not recover. Decided to try it since there was no going back to my old configuration, turned off Cortona because it was annoying and now find out it is going to spy and annoy me again with no option to turn off. Apple sounds better and better for my next PC.
you may want to kick yourself. after the forced install (or for that matter even a voluntary install) of w10 there was a 30 day period to revert to your previous os.

I am testing windows 10 now, did an update on a laptop hard drive I found in a trashed laptop, it had windows 7 ultimate! And well coming from windows 7 home edition I dont see what was so ultimate about it.

But now I got windows 10 pro, and whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat a disappointment!

Its blocky, firefox browser keep locking up, and it just looks old!

it looks like an operating system that would have been used back int he 1980's with the solid coloring and windows.

Windows 7 looks cool, shiny, simple, fast easy, and everything works!

I mean at least I an say I got it all free, but what did I get really? I mean I am reinstalling all my steam games to test them out, and reinstalling all my development tools, all to do everything I was doing on my windows 7 hard drive!

So when I am done, I will go back to 7 and wait another year before Microsoft puts a 128 bit opperating system (which would be the only reason to need a new OS if anyone knows what I mean!
when I went to win 7-64 bit, I found that I could no longer install any 8 bit programs. I had a lot of games from w95 that were now trash unless I went to a dual boot os or changed to a win 7 32 bit. I'll bet that with a 128 bit os 16 and many even 32 bit programs won't install or run.

This is what I feared about Windows "10"(wink wink) from the beginning. The very nature of a constantly morphing operating system is scary especially given Microsofts track record of using strong-arm tactics. Giving Windows a version name such as 10 was a gimmick to keep the sheep moving all at the same time. It changes daily and you have to go with those changes whether you want them or not.

I have 24 hours left to decide whether to taint my Windows 7 key by relating it to Windows 10. The imposed deadline is psychologically making me think I'm missing out on something big if I dont. :)

This articles makes me think even harder. I think I'll stick with my current configuration. One system with Windows 7, a second system with Windows 10, and "never the twain shall meet".

Thanks for the link to ReactOS. I've never heard of it but it looks very interesting.

LOL at all the people formerly gushing over Windows 10 now surprised at the changing tactics as the "free" period ends. It's called "bait and switch" and was 100% predicted the moment they announced it was both "free" and that you couldn't disable updates (the combination of which is an open admission you're no longer Microsoft's customer, you're the new monetized product for Microsoft's new customers (advertisers)). What's surprising is that people are surprised over what the inevitable effect of that is...

We bow before you oh lord; we are not worthy.

We saw this coming!

F**k you M$... Seriously this is ridiculous. I'm sticking with 7 as long as possible for my gaming machine. I'm glad I've switched to Linux for my internetting. Unfortunately still stuck with this crap at work. Apple, Oracle, Novell/SuSe... anyone needs to make an alternative to Active Directory. We need some competition for M$ and their "the Microsoft way" crap.

It's for this very reason, that I am building a network firewall. So that I can block what comes in and goes out of my network. I'm already blocking Cortana by using a personal firewall. Microsoft can do whatever the f*cker they want with their OS, but in my network I have control.

You can run a Linux Server and install Resara or OpenLDAP. Both are Active Directory alternatives.

Normally, I am on MS side on stuff as it seems most of the time folks just see MS in the title and go off unreasonably on them.. This time however, I have to agree with the users. It is NEVER a good idea to force a feature on users. I don't mind Cortana and find it useful, even if it isn't a gamebreaker. But even I find it a bit overlordish to force this on users.

if you are a developer staying on windows 10 is pretty much mandatory now unless you use something that works only on windows 7.
- you can finally remove the 265 character limits for path --> you can finally delete folders created by NPM
- native linux bash commands and software
- native docker support
- hyper-v can also enabled from "turn windows features on/off"
- using the new command prompt is so much better than the older one
- the built in multi-desktop works like a charm too

So, it will be a lot longer than a year since there do not seem to be any such near term prospects for any 128-bit address capable CPU's available to us ordinary mortals any time soon...

And I'll do the best I can to remove and disable it!

Edit:
According to Microsoft you can opt-out of Cortana’s suite of personalized services, use it to search the web without losing in or hide Cortana and the search box in the taskbar altogether. You can also head to Start> Settings> Privacy> Speech> Inking & Typing and toggle an option called 'Stop getting to know me', which stop it from learning your typing inputs.

I dunno, doesnt seem all that mandatory... though I'm sure there will be several other ways to disable her.

If there are programmer/hacker enthusiasts, there is ALWAYS a way. :)
