More Americans now support banning phones all day at school, not just in class

In a nutshell: Banning students from using phones in US schools has long been a controversial topic, but for the first time ever, more Americans now support all-day bans – as opposed to the devices only being banned in classrooms.

According to Pew Research Center, 77% of US adults now support in-classroom phone bans for middle and high school students, marking the second consecutive year that support has increased – the figure stood at 68% in 2024. Just 18% now oppose such a ban, while 6% are unsure.

The survey also shows that the long-running trend of more people supporting all-day bans has changed. For the first time, more adults (48%) support "bell-to-bell" school cellphone bans for middle and high school students, up from 36% the previous year. It's still far from universal support, as 43% oppose such a ban.

Younger adults aged 18-29 show the lowest level of support for in-class (57%) and all-day (28%) phone bans. Support increases with age, with those aged 65 and older showing the most support for the bans.

Republicans are also more likely to support both classroom and all-day bans, while Democrats are more in favor of classroom bans than all-day restrictions.

The big issue for most parents is that although they don't want their children distracted while learning, they also want to ensure that they're contactable during emergencies such as school shootings. Other reasons for opposing a ban in classes include it being too difficult for teachers to enforce, the belief that phones can be useful tools for teaching students, and that parents alone should decide if their child can use a phone in class.

In most states, parents' opinions on the matter count for little. Forty-two states have introduced measures restricting phone use in schools, though they vary from classroom-only and all-day bans to letting districts set their own policies.

Most students, of course, aren't in favor of these bans. One said she relies on music through headphones to concentrate on schoolwork, while others say that apps can support their learning. Student supporters, however, say that these bans give teachers more one-on-one time with them.

All schools and colleges need to band the use of electronic devices in classrooms, not only is disruptive but also invalidate their knowledge on subjects of study as the faculty don't really know who is really doing the class work if the student or their A.I infused mobile devices.

For those concerned about life threat emergencies, classrooms should be equipped with a dedicated line to make emergency calls before implementing such band.

Cheap, durable flip phones that can only call emergency numbers and those preset by parents or guardians should be commonplace by now. If the parent decides they want their kids to be able to call their friends, a pizza place or what-have-you, they can put those numbers in themselves. Calls could be remotely audited so you know who your kids are in touch with. Let's face it: western society topped out around 2007 and we need to go back. I can't think of one positive development in communications tech that's been produced in the last 20 years.

It was simple when my children were in school. IF you have your phone out (or if it makes a sound) during class it gets taken away and only a parent can get it back.

Simple
That is how it was when my kids were in school 15 to 20 years ago, at that time it was just flip phones. Biggest issue was texting someone.

These kids don't need a phone in school. They need to pay attention in school, as to learn something. Of course depending on the school, they might learn what to think (by these so-called educators) rather than how to think. Critical Thinking Skills comes to mind. And, maybe learn how to protest/riot!

Addiction on electronic devices is starting very early nowadays, when parents give their phones to toddlers to shut them up so they can have "a quiet time". It is like people unlearned how to raise kids.

So yeah, it is kind difficult for a kid raised this way to pay attention to a adult for long periods of time.

Wrap the schools in Faraday cages. No internet access at all wile on school property.

Also due to widespread AI cheating, no more homework. All assignments to be done in the class with no phone access.

Yet guns kill more kids each year.. nice priorities.

Guns are or should be completely banned by a legitimate public school if I am not mistaken. But, of course, someone can still slip one in if they want to. BTW, you didn't say if the child was killed in school, at home, or on the streets. It's to me a case of comparing apples and oranges. And also, a cell phone is perfectly capable of getting a child killed, as well as being a venue for sexual predators and kidnappers.

Not a bad idea at all to me since that's where everthing they have to play with now came from in the first place, including the sh** that hits the fan.

Allow complete freedom until the guardrails have to come out after 'X' gets out of control, and then complain your freedom doesn't exist anymore because of government and not themselves.

Accountability works BOTH ways.

Rinse and repeat...

What a country the US has become that somebody would think this is some form of counter-argument to justify guns... It's so dumb it beggars belief.
I don't think he was saying that this is a counter-argument to justify guns. More likely that guns are not the only way to kill children.

I just re-read it ten times and tried to see where you are coming from. It's still just the dumbest thing I ever read, sorry. Trying to statistically compare a woman making the choice of having an abortion to a nut job running around a school killing children with an AK-47 he bought over a counter is teeth-clenchingly ignorant.

What's teeth-clenchingly ignorant is someone who believes banning an imaginary category called "assault weapons" will somehow prevent lunatics from targeting schools. The worst school massacre in the US was due to a homemade bomb, not a gun, and even simply knife attacks in schools in have killed thousands -- one single attack in Japan alone killed 19 people. If an maniac in the US can't acquire a firearm, he'll simply crash a loaded truck into a crowded school event, or chain the school doors shut and set the building on fire.

The vast majority of shootings today come from inner-city gang violence, as more than half the children age 13 and up in some of these neighborhoods carry an already-illegal pistol ... and yet liberals perpetually refuse to allow us to stop and frisk them. Why is that exactly?

This article originated as a argument for banning cell phones in public schools. It does not have anything to do with whatever a person uses or wherever he chooses to kill a child. That is solely up to the discretion of the abortionist or the murderers. I still say it's like comparing apples to oranges and now we are off the subject of cell phone use in public schools. If you want to argue about the morality of abortions or are an advocate of gun control those are two different subjects.

When you say gun violence, you are walking around a giant elephant in the room.
Most of so called gun violence, and gun related incidents, come from a tiny minority
which can and should be addressed if we really want to end ______ violence.
We can never make a change for the better if we are not honest enough
to give correct diagnoze.

Vehicular homicide and arson and knives and the like are readily available options in most developed countries. And yet in almost all such countries, violence is not even in the top 3 causes of death in the 1-18 year old demographic.

The sole exception is the USA, where firearms are the leading cause of death among that age group.

The vast majority of shootings happen in red states like Texas and Florida, and the per capita shooting statistics also peak overwhelmingly in red states. The perpetrators are 90% male. Why aren't we dealing with our Southern male problem?

Another top ten entry in the pantheon of dumb. 'Lets not ban guns because more people die in schools from bombs and knives'. Can we all just stand back and admire that statement for the multiple levels of dumb it contains. Truly a master of the craft at work.

Once again off the subject, but stll a good point.
