Motorola and Verizon have sent out press invites to an October 27 event in New York City in which the companies will unveil their 2015 line of Droid smartphones. The tagline for the event notes that everything we expect from a phone will change.

The invite specifically mentions “Droids” meaning we’ll see more than one new device break cover a week and a half from now.

Motorola’s Droid is one of the most recognizable names among Android smartphones. Designed as an iPhone alternative, the first Droid debuted in late 2009 as a Verizon exclusive. The iPhone was exclusively supported by Cingular (AT&T) when it debuted and remained that way for several years until the launch of the iPhone 4 in 2011.

Motorola and Verizon have launched nearly two dozen Droid smartphones over the past six years. The companies didn’t reveal which phones they plan to unveil later this month although scuttlebutt suggests we’ll see the Droid Maxx 2 and the Droid Turbo 2.

The Droid Maxx 2 is rumored to be none other than the Moto X Play, one of three new smartphones Motorola announced back in July. The Droid Turbo 2, meanwhile, is expected to be a flagship device sporting a 5.5-inch QHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3GB of RAM and a 20-megapixl rear-facing camera.

Both devices are likely to run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box with an upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow to come shortly after.

Why call it the Droid Maxx2 and not the Droid Maxxx? Verizon could then throw in a few free subs to some p0rn sites and sell a helluva lot more of them. :D
