Movies/DVD playing on half the screen

I've been using windows media player classic and also KM player in an attempt to play some DVDs - a few of which will only play on the left half of the screen in a compressed window. I have tried to expand, stretch, whatever, to get a normal size with no luck. I have tried VLC player, but the latest version of VLC sucks and frequently stalls out. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I just want to view the DVD in normal size over the full screen of my laptop.

Have you tried changing or updating the laptops video drivers?

it's not the video drivers. My video works fine. I think it's the codec. I downloaded another codec for wmp11 - seems to be working now.
