MSI 2060 Super Armour OC Review

So I brought a 2060 super even after the launch of the AMD Navi series, why, when Navi offers better value, did I choose the 2060 super?

Well first off the price, RX 5700 was priced almost equally to this card and that was for the reference model and not even custom card like this, I could have waited for the launch of AIB models but rest assured they would be priced almost same or higher in my region. RX 5700XT was priced almost equally to 2070 super so yeah, I choose the model I felt most comfortable with. This was actually the same story at the launch of polaris in 2016, with the launch price of RX 480 being much higher than some of the custom AIB 1060 6GB cards.

Secondly open GL performance of AMD leaves somewhat a lot to be desired due to poor driver optimisations, so Nvidia is the only choice left there.

Previously I had 1060 Gaming X and it was the best card in terms of thermals I had. Both the cards offer “3” 6mm heat pipes but the 1060 Gaming X is much larger card with larger heat-sink. (1060 Gaming X : 277 x 140 x 39 mm Vs 2060S : 250 x 129 x 44 mm ). It is also lighter at 809 gram versus 1017 gram for 1060.

Truthfully saying in terms of card design it felt kind of a same thing going to Armour from old Gaming X. This was the only decently priced model available and the other AIB cards were priced too high to be considered (not counting the zotac mini but it was only $14 USD cheaper than this).

Here's a link to both cards if you want to check them out :

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1060-GAMING-X-6G/Overview

I paid roughly $515 USD for the card. Sapphire RX 5700 (non XT) is priced roughly $493 USD on amazon right now, and some direct vendors have it for $460 USD with delivery. So am happy with the choice. Given current state of the market I would say the card is priced too high and it should be much lower to make sense. Maybe with Intel joining the fray in future may be we can hope some sanity in the GPU market. A midrange GPU costs same as a PS 4 Pro...wow.

Now coming to the card itself, it is a very solid build, but the backplate is plastic, so it will work as a heat trap, the 1060 Gaming X had a metal plate which worked as heat sink. But given the thermals of the card I cannot complain, maximum temperature I had were 73°C under 3D Mark Time spy.

Also the fans are quite, I had the card under artificial stress with fan curve hitting 80% at 70°C or 158°F, and could barely even hear the fans. The card does have that killer zero DB at 60°C feature.

Given my ambient has good amount of fans running (non AC) and that helps to cover the noise up. In the same environment my GTX 570 (gigabyte triple fan) sounded like a jet taking off and the TDP of it was 225 watts, which is not far from 175 watt of 2060S. And this does heats up the space when am gaming, but with good airflow in the room it is not noticeable. Come winter I may save a few penny on room heating.

The Rainbow LED on the side of the card is the only positive addition over Gaming x but so far I could not customise it “individually” through Mystic Lights set up. It can be done so with the “set all” option but it then scrambles the whole set up. I did try two different version 3.0.025 and 3.0.035 but had the same result. The gaming X card was shown as a separate GPU tab in the software. May be I have to do a fresh install of windows for it?
Visually you will be hard pressed to find a difference in new Armour and the old Gaming X series. Other than the shorter length of the card which is a good thing for maximum compatibility, and it does not compromise the cooling. Which is a good thing atleast for me.

In terms of performance it roughly doubled my FPS over 1060 6 GB. The 2060 Super gives 1080 level of performance at a lower TDP and price point, to put it simply.
But it is 2019 and you still do pay a lot for that level of performance.

Paired it with my AOC Agon 144Hz monitor and all game are now running in that sweet high refresh rate.

Time SPY benchmark saw a 45% boost by the upgrade. Which was really great as I went from 22 FPS on 1060 to almost 60FPS constant on 2060S.

This is more for fun, I had the results from my 570 on FX 8350 (still running btw as lan machine and data backup). The 1060 and 2060S are both on the same system with 2700x with 32 GB RAM. I have deliberately tried to keep the settings same so as to have some semblance of comparison.
570 with FX had the score of 694, where as 1060 a score of 1784, and the 2060S a score of 2888. That is a 38.22% jump in heaven going from 1060 to 2060S.

Unigine superposition saw a jump of 44% when the upgrade to 2060S was done from 1060.

This is the graph overlay of Assassin's Creed - Odyssey. The green part shows the lead of 2060s over 1060 6GB roughly, for comparison the settings were kept the same. I could hit Ultra settings (GeForce optimized) with 60+ FPS easy on 2060S.

the Witcher 3 saw almost 50% jump or double the performance boost, I went from 48-59 FPS on 1060 6GB to 105-120 FPS on 2060S given the same settings.

In Userbenchmark I went from 75% for gaming to 106% by upgrading the card only, all the rest was kept the same.

So while the card in itself is well build and gives great performance, the price leaves a little to be desired.
Another thing is MSI is out of the codes for the game bundle and is not honoring the promotion which is a real bummer and especially fraudulent because the original promotion was to end on 8th of Aug 19 but they extended the promotion to 16th Sep 19, now if you don't have codes to give then that is false advertising.
Below you can see the error on promotion page and on the side is the receipt. I brought the card on 9th of Aug 19.

Other than this big kick in the nuts...MSI made a great card.
