Solved Multiple iexplore.exe and chrome.exe

OTL log posted above. Reamining steps will be done shortly.

Quick question...awhile back I installed a Codec for Windows Media Player so that I could play the videos taken with my phone. It's now asking if I want to update to Codec 4.2.9 (http://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com/). Should I? The update notification pops up every time I start up my computer. Despite checking, "Do not ask about updates in the future" numerous times, it still pops up. If I need to ask this in a differnt thread, just let me know. Thanks.

Just wanted to say I'm still here, just haven't had much access to the computer lately. May be two or three days before I get everything finished.

Since the cleaning, the multiple .exe files has only happened a couple of times. This is an improvement from pre-cleaning where it was happening at least 50% of the time.

Additionally, the internet is terribly slow. In fact, websites that have a lot of pictures and/or videos on them may fail to load. Watching a video, whether on YouTube or from some website, is completely out of the question because the internet will crash.

I initially thought it might be the router, but my cell phone has no issues accessing the same websites and watching the same videos over the same network. My computer is old and storage capacity is limited, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Videos are working much, much better. Thanks. I don't understand the method behind the madness, but I appreciate all of your help.

Very well :)

Let's do the same with Chrome...

Reset Chrome...
Click on "Customize and control Google Chrome":

Click "Settings" then "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the screen.

Click "Reset browser settings" button.

Restart Chrome.

Did as instructed.

Tonight was awful. The internet crashed almost every time I opened a new page. Also, the multiple chrome.exe files was a problem. One time I had two windows open in Incognito mode and there were 8 .exe files. Another time I had four windows open in Icognito mode and there were 7 .exe files.

Maybe I should just get a new computer.

Were those windows opening by themselves?

If so...

Reinstall Chrome...
  • Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
  • Go to the Start menu > Control Panel. (Windows 8 users: Learn how to access the Control Panel)
  • Click Programs and Features.
  • Double-click Google Chrome.
  • Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog. Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, by selecting the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox.
Install fresh copy.

In that case it's normal. Chrome like IE will open new chrome.exe process with any new tab or new window open.

If no other issues you should be good to go.

How many .exe files should open for each tab? Just one, right?

The problem that keeps happening is that I'll have "x" number of tabs open, but more than "x" .exe files. Tonight, I had two tabs open in Google and there were 8 .exe files. Is that normal?

Interesting. Good info.

Also, back when we did all of the scans, one of them changed the name of "My Computer" to "v,mmvmvmvmv n". Is that something to be worried about or should I just change it back?

Hmmm...

This is the value responsible for "My Computer" name and it looks normal:
"LocalizedString"="@%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,-9216"

Are we talking about "My Computer" in "Start" menu?
