See if you can change it manually:

  1. Log into your computer with administrative rights.
  2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel, and then double-click the System icon. Alternatively, right-click the My Computer icon, and from the menu that appears, select Properties.

  3. You will see the System Properties window. At the top of the window, click the Computer Name tab.

  4. Click Change... . You will see your computer's name listed.

  5. In the space marked "Computer Name:", delete the text and enter a new name for your computer. Click OK.

I was able to change the name of the computer, however, it did not change the name of what was formerly "My Computer."

The icon on my desktop and in the Start menu that is pictured as a monitor and tower has always been labeled "My Computer." This is not the same thing as the name of the computer, which I was able to change manually. The "My Computer" icon is what was changed to "v, mmvmvmvmvn" during one of the previous scans.

I finally checked my XP installation.
When you right click on "My Computer" in Start menu you'll see "Rename" option.
