NC6000 hard drive failure

  1. I am using a Compaq nc6000 laptop which came with a 40 gig hard drive (pata). I upgraded to a Western Digital 250 gig hard drive (pata). I am using XP with service pack 3. I use Firefox and sometimes Explorer. It worked great for about a month and crashed. I could not reboot, repair or recover. I sent it back for warranty and it was replaced. I still have the same problem Only a clean install would get it working again. This happened repeatedly and not sure if it is a coincidence or if it is a problem with the laptop or if warranty just repacked the same hard drive. The original hard drive works fine (40 gig), never a problem. Could it be that the hp isn't compatible with the larger disk space? Thanks!

The original 40 gig hard drive works, but both 250 gig hard drives failed. Does this sound like 2 bad hard drives in a row or doesn't hp support larger pata hard drives?
