Need help

I need help with my computer for gaming. The computer is an HP Pavillion a135y. My problem occurs when playing Civilization 4 Behond the Sword. Basically when I start playing the game it runs fine but as the game advances it runs very very slow. I'm talking like 30 min to complete a turn. I'm thinking I might need a better graphics card or something. The problem is the computer I use is my girlfriends and I'm not sure how good the current card is or if the computer simply can't handle a game like Civ. Honestly, this is the only computer game I own and i'm not sure what I need to play this game without the slowness. Can I simply buy a better graphics card? Price is a factor for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
