Netbook System Restore in a loop

Started System Restore on an old netbook and out of habit I closed the lid.

Now every time I try to boot up a message is displayed that the System Restore is restarting, but then nothing happens.

How can I get pass this message to just boot up as it was, or get the restore completed?

Can you get it to boot into safe mode?

no. the only option it gives is System Restore Restarting.

It's an Acer with Windows 7 Starter if that helps any.

Sorry, but I just need to be sure you are doing this correctly. Are you tapping the F8 key as soon as you switch on.

Please describe exactly what you see on screen from the second you switch it on so I get a clear picture of what is happening.
