TL;DR: Netflix has released the first teaser trailer and release date for the fourth season of The Witcher. While a lot of people have lost interest in the show since its excellent debut, the penultimate season marks the arrival of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, replacing the much-loved Henry Cavill.

The trailer sees the new-look Geralt taking on a wraith. Hemsworth doesn't quite sound as guttural as Cavill's take on Geralt, but the action looks pretty good. We see the monster hunter trap the wraith using a Yrden sign before ripping out and crushing its heart. A return to some more action-focused episodes could attract new or returning viewers when season four begins on October 30.

Three years ago, fans of The Witcher series and Cavill's portrayal of its protagonist found out the bad news: the former Superman would be leaving after the third season, replaced by the Hunger Games' Hemsworth.

It was assumed that Cavill departed The Witcher so he could return as Superman following his cameo as the character in Black Adam, but DC Studios' then-new co-chairmen, James Gunn and Peter Safran, dropped him as the Man of Steel. There had also been rumors of creative differences between Cavill and The Witcher showrunners over not being faithful to the source material.

It's hard not to feel sorry for Hemsworth. Cavill made the role of Geralt his own and his "King of the nerds" reputation further endeared him to fans. The famed gamer says he's played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt two and a half times, builds his own PCs, and is a massive fan of the Warhammer franchise, having completed Total War: Warhammer 2 six times as six different races. The incoming Australian actor has some big shoes to fill.

Many of the video's comments complain about the show's producers and its direction, or Cavill's departure, rather than Hemsworth's performance. It's worth remembering that a lot of people mocked Cavill's original screen test for Geralt.

Also joining Hemsworth in the show are Laurence Fishburne as Regis, Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart, and James Purefoy as Skellen. Freya Allan (Ciri), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), and Joey Batey (Jaskier) are reprising their roles.

Season four of The Witcher begins on October 30.

I cannot believe the show was not canceled at this point. Henry left for a reason, because the director and the scripters were not even following the lore material.

Season 1 was accurate to The Last Wish in some perspective, but the whole Geralt trapped in Cintra never happened. Yennefer back story was never developed by Andrezj either. There is only one line in the Last Wish were Geralt understand why Yennefer have a strange and abnormal look to her, and it is when he understand that she was a hunchback.

Season 2 made many left turn and is almost completely different from the books except the first episode with Nivellen, which the only difference is pretty much the presence of Ciri which is not the case in the books. Let's not talk about Eskel here and Kaer Morhen, it is not even close.

Season 3 is way more accurate and especially the end, but there is still characters that were never in the scenes the series put them.

Henry left because of all this. The games were so accurate to the lore in its own way, and the series made it a Netflix render which just doesn't match the universe.

I really love Laurence Fishburne, but seriously, Regis?

Eh, The Witcher was always kinda schlocky in that eurojank sort of way. Fun games with tons of engaging themes, a bit try-hard with the adult stuff but whatever, it was a good pulp fantasy thing.

Never read the books, but I get the impression people treat them like high literature when really they're quality pulp fiction.

The TV series was fun in a Legend of Hercules or Xena Warrior Princess kind of way. I know the goal was to make the next "Game of Thrones" but the series feels like it would have been right at home back on UPN back in the 90's from the set design to the acting to the stories. They should lean into the hokey-ness, do more "monster of the week" episodes rather than the long form streaming thing, and they'd have a pretty good thing going.

I agree. The show was already losing steam due to the internal drama. This is a Witcher show, it's going to need to appeal to the Witcher fans, who want to see the Witcher, not whatever bizzarro poorly written slop Hollyweird squeezes out then covers with Geralt's skin.

It's gonna be fun to watch Geralt become a minor character in his own show as the showrunner's OCs take over and make it a slopfest of mediocrity.

I don't think they make these shows anymore with the intention of people actually watching them.

It so they can advertise woke stuff via trailers etc.

Poor Liam Hemsworth. No matter how good he is, half the audience will just be watching with their arms crossed whispering this is not my Geralt...

The real monster in The Witcher might be the showrunners who let Cavill slip away while fighting with him over lore accuracy.

I was thinking that myself in the books Regis comes off as a well educated white male of Middle/Upper Class birth I have no doubt that Fishbourne can pull it off but really though this is taking DEI to far

I'm surprised they didn't cancel this entirely after the unmitigated trainwreck that was Season 3. I did the "It can't possibly get worse" thing after Season 2. Never again.

The show was dead the moment they turned Geralt into a side character in his own show. The Witcher is a girl boss power trip by the creator who screams DA FORS IZ FEMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALE!
