For the record, my comment is non-partisan. Deep technical brilliance and foresight in a new, rapidly emerging field is not something that is natively going to intersect with those working in politics who by definition must be generalists. And the people who could possibly advise them are the same people who are already contributing one way or another to that industry.

Congress and regulators will one day play an informed and important role in reflecting the values of the people in the AI industry, but that day will arrive after the world has had decades of hard won experience -- just like with every other industry that has gone from new and unexplored to more or less routine over the past few centuries.

Computer code is a form of speech. In the past, the government tried to regulate the export of encryption code as a munition, only for the courts to slap that down. At the end of the day, any AI model is simply computer code, and thus is protected speech. The sort of regulations being called here would be a gross restriction on the freedom of speech of people doing AI development.

You are right; and that is a good thing. People being able to have open, honest, divisive disagreements on the internet is far better than what we had in the past, where a heavily centralized media could shove out whatever its handlers wanted without a way for serious disagreement to be heard. Its better for the country to be honestly, openly divided than have some dishonest illusion of a 'unified" country.

It's not discourse that is the problem, it is folks showing up in the comments thread who aren't there for discourse, they are there with their minds already made up that they are right, with no interest in really hearing the other side's opinion. It then devolves into mud slinging and petty insults. On social media it's worse, as the algorithms are designed to maximize this (there's not really an algorithm here, but it happens nonetheless).

Not at all. In fact, I'm approaching my 21 year anniversary here.
I don't post as often, as I can only take the whining and whimpering about VGA prices so much. The same goes for Intel versus AMD, which is likewise quite tedious.

As for furthering "super intelligent AI development," I going to speculate that it should be top secret, and left in the hands of our militaries. AI in the private sector should be tightly controlled, and limitations on its use strictly implemented.

While. "only in the hands of the military", obviously breeds a set of fears all on its own, it's much better than making hyper intelligence generally available to the unwashed masses.

As for "data centers", for exactly what earthly reason do we need hundreds of them in every state? All that's going on is politicians being bribed to support them. All that generally happens, is the residents of the area in which they're built, get to pay double electricity bills, while the mutts who build them, get tax breaks.

People, get your sh!t together. You spend your time bellyaching about innumerable "invasions of privacy", when the ultimate invasion of privacy is on the horizon, and getting closer.

I can say honestly that I never had an issue keeping track of my bills, or finding information on Google before the AI craze. Now, Google's AI want's to pretend that it's your friend. The trouble with that is, some people, perhaps too many people, are starting to believe it is.

Here we go again, there is nothing about AI and the bullshit that goes with it that will ever do what people are imagining it can do. We might as well get the Department of Defense to make radioactive spiders to train spidermen and why not some magnetic fields to make an ironman. You are aware that politicians don't elect themselves, aren't you? The quickest way to solve this would be not vote for them. My perhaps limited understanding of the US' electoral process is, (as you say 'whether R or D), that you should have younger people run against them in the primaries.

So, you get what you vote for. Or, in the case of the major parties, you get what the party committees allow you have . That's why they have conventions, to ram the a**hole du jour down our throats.

I agree completely. But, a super intelligent AI is a military weapon, not a consumer product.

In the same way you can't go to the local gun store and buy a shoulder fire anti-tank missile. the general public shouldn't have access to weapons grade AI.

Now, if you provide AI with the physical means to produce its own weapons, that's when the biological world ends.
