New Bernie Sanders bill would ban superintelligent AI and threaten developers with 20 years in prison

Hoo boy where to start. You started it. You go back to the 40s with your side calling people nazis even though your side is more anti-Semitic than the pointy-headed whitehats.
I'm not on a side... unless you call a dislike of racist, bigots and kiddy fiddlers a side...

Oh, but it has, and very much so, albeit in a system categorized as, "Social Democracy".

We should try it. All the Scandinavian countries are doing it.
Oh please, spare me the "Scandinavian countries are socialist" bull$hit.
The late USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, for those who have forgotten what the abbreviation meant) was socialist. This amazing socialist experiment murdered 20% of its own population, so "we" should most definitely not try it.
But you may move to Venezuela, Cuba or N.Korea.

You really don't know diddly squat about world politics, do you. <(That's declarative. It's only worded in the interrogatory.)
The USSR was never "Socialist". It was "Communist", and ruled by dictators by any other name_period_full stop. They went through the pretense of calling it "Socialist", which it was in name only.
Stalin was the person responsible for only "god" knows how many millions of Russians killed after WWII. Many of those killed by him were soldiers returning from the front, under the auspices that they might have aided and abetted the enemy. (Which BTW, was Germany.). In other words, traitors.

As I said, the Scandinavian countries are, "Social Democracies"** Look it up. The Norwegians are purported to be the happiest people in the world. BTW, Norway is a "kingdom", with a real king, and not some braying jacka** who imagines himself a king, as we do here in the US.

Here's the story of "Operation Barbarossa". If you have the attention span to listen through until the end, you'll note that the soldier/narrator, winds up in a concentration camp facing death.

** What's the matter, can't you read?

And to go further I would say other nations made it a priority to try deception just in the name.
"The people's Republic of China", was NEVER a Republic, and many others have put Republic in their name, even though they have nothing to do with one.
They are considered full on Authoritarian, which is why trump slobbers over them.

A US-only ban seems almost meaningless unless China, Europe, and every other major AI power sign onto something similar. Otherwise you’ve turned an existential-risk problem into a geopolitical race where everyone has an incentive to cheat.
Everyone already has an incentive to cheat. Well, two reasons, actually.
1. Delusions of grandeur and world domination
2. Making more profit than anyone else (which is the same thing as 1 if you take the time to think about it.)

This reminds me of when the government freaked out about open source encryption technology and wanted to make that illegal.

It's too late, unfortunately. The genie is out of the bottle, regardless of your 20-year prison term threat.

It's a good start to some form of regulation. What I found disturbing in this entire episode is Jensen Huang's complete dismissal of this as overblown and completely untrue. I mean, I know you want to be successful, but what the heck is wrong with that dude for dismissing any attempts at regulation entirely??

You're giving Bernie Sanders far too much credit for what he would be able to accomplish. Bernie is, and always has been, on the far left of the political spectrum. He's completely unelectable as POTUS, in spite of the fact he has run several times.

As with any other proposal in an (allegedly) Democratic society, you ask for the moon, but take what you can get in compromise.

Now, Sanders is, and always been a proponent of universal health care. Republicans have always managed to suppress it. Just imagine, if you will, a society where medical bankruptcies no longer existed. Both Canada and Norway offer free healthcare, along with lower drug prices to all citizens. In fact, efforts have been made by US customs, to prevent US citizens from buying their meds in Canada and bringing them back to the US.

Meanwhile, many of the nincompoops here at TechSpot concentrate their worries and frustrations on whether or not some stupid game they bought, is actually owned or merely rented by them.

The establishment, and major drug companies, have always relied on the, "if we don't charge exorbitant prices drugs, we won't be able to do research to develop more cures".

Do yourself a favor, don't ever get really sick in the US. The chances are that even if you recover, you won't have a house to come home to.

As for super intelligent AI, I'm sticking with my story that it should be categorized as a military weapon, and not passed out haphazardly to every Tom, D*ck, and dingle berry, in the general public.

Making money always trumps maintaining any semblance of retaining one's character. It's as simple as that.

The only attempts at true "Communism" were, believe it or not, made by the Hippies, IIRC, in the "Hashbury" district of San Francisco.

The idea was to, "tune in, turn on, and tune out". So, they retreated to communal farms, and lived in a way reminiscent of the PA Dutch in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. But that concept was scrubbed as the "Boomers" grew up, and decided that money wasn't so bad after all.

Another attempt was made, (still being made?), in Israel by living in Kibbutzes .

Wonder how much the CCP paid him to do this? Bernie is a communist, always has been.
He spent his HONEYMOON in the soviet union!
No "AI" in America? That means all of the tech giants will build data centers OUTSIDE of America.
And, if you do a search in China, you will find MASSIVE amounts of solar panel & solar mirror power generation stations out in their desert areas, and just so happen....they have MASSIVE lakes near them too! Perfect place for huge data centers!

Please don't bite my head off, I know how politics can get really ugly fast, but isn't Bernie Sanders for Socialism? Which has a MISERABLE history? We're talking 100 million deaths around the world and is considered by many the most deadliest ideology in the world. So many countries have tried it and failed and caused catastrophic consequences. Capitalism definitely has its fair share of problems and by no means perfect, but I'd rather take that than Socialism. Just several examples are below:

Venezuela and Cuba are examples of socialism, look at those places, they look like third world countries. Ethiopia use to be a Socialist nation than reverted BACK to Capitalism because of the DEVASTATING consequences it's had on their nation. Under socialist military rule (the Derg) from 1974 to 1991, Ethiopia faced catastrophic consequences, including severe famine, widespread political massacres, a shattered economy, and prolonged civil and regional wars. Historians estimate that between 1.4 million and 2.5 million people died as a direct and indirect result of these socialist policies and conflicts. Cambodia is also another example of a socialist nation who eventually went BACK to Capitalism when the country experienced one of the WORST humanitarian disasters of the 20th century under the rule of the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Their ideology was inspired by an extreme form of Marxism-Leninism combined with radical Maoist ideas, but it was far more extreme than the socialist systems of countries like Vietnam or Cuba which resulted in an additional 1.5 to 2.5 million deaths just in that country alone. North Korea is also a prime example of another socialist country which eventually resulted in Communism which has led to tens of thousands of people dying and getting murdered by an oppressor! This is just a small example of several nations that has had devastating consequences because of socialism. There are a lot more. However, I got into politics 2.5 years ago so I don't know everything. I'm learning and open to discussion here.

The best you got?
Try this. Poopie pant's approval ratings have now hit the low 30s. If the news is to be believed, we\re running low on weapon stocks. Iran still has the capability to hit US bases, and block up the Strait of Hormuz All in a war that was supposed to "last a few weeks".

Donald Trump is the biggest, incompetent, ego maniacal, sociopathic, demented, piece of sh!t, to ever disgrace US politics. He has, in two terms, run up the largest national deficit in our national history, with little to nothing to show for it.

A Russian oligarch just paid for his kid\s wedding celebration, on a private island, capped off with with an estimated $70,000 US, fireworks display.

Many Republicans running for office in the midterms, are distancing themselves from having his stink torpedo their candidacy.

You, in and of yourself, aren't worth the time invested in typing a reply to you.

However, I would like to point out a couple of old adages to you. Take them for what they're worth:

"Birds of a feather flock together". AND, "We are all judged by the company we keep".

You've apparently already made the decision that, "you're smarter than 70% of the population". However, "Dunning and Kroger" dictate otherwise.

Oh, and BTW, Diesel fuel has hit $6.00 a gallon. Depending on how long that lasts, I start to wonder how long any, or all, "free shipping" offers will last.

Could it be that the true concern of AI companies and investors in the last week is financial liability? Cozying up the the Federal government for protection. Similar to 47 U.S. Code § 230 for the telephone companies. They may be foreseeing very large liabilities diminishing or eliminating their very large profits by an out of control scenario. This turn around in a week is seen. However, what as yet is unseen?

.Karl Marx wrote, "The Communist Manifesto", (Which I've read BTW), which is what Marxist, Lennonist governments are based on. Take particular note that the essay wasn't called, "The Socialist Manifesto".
The countries you've mentioned are authoritarian regimes and have absolutely nothing to do with Socialist agenda, nothing.

So, you tell me, how can a government pretending to be based on the ideals in The Communist Manifesto, generate the hubris to call itself "Socialist"?

Socialist objectives are more along the lines of universal healthcare, not Communist party membership.

I tried to explain that the "Union of Soviet Socialists Republic", was nothing but an authoritarian government trying to spruce up its international image by pretending to be "Socialist".
What in large part did it in, was the fact that it could no longer afford that armies it created. I've seen photos of their nuclear submarines rusting away. beached on river banks.

Soooo, small question there, how would you or anybody else define super-intelligent ?? because I do believe people are not actually intelligent, we think we are but this is another story.
Any AI will be limited by the information that it is trained on, so whatever it generates is within those parameters, plain and simple. At most it can do things faster because it remembers more.

And yes sure some basic type of intelligence might have a way of developing, and if it magically evolves to the realm of super-intelligent we would not be able to even comprehend what happened, literally.
What do you think it would be able to do once it gets there ? Did any of you ask this question ?

Putting people in jail or whatever, making someone responsable for creating this thing is silly. This would be the least of your worries, and if they do and you will need their help afterwards, putting them in prison will surely help huh ? or maybe blackmail them with getting free or something else.

Whatever; if someone will create an all powerful AI it won't be the big companies, it will be some independent programmer working from their "basement" with limited resources. Living beings are a testament to the fact that you do not need megawatts of power to create a neural network capable of learning and adapting, which means our approach to AI is simply wrong.

Reading comments on this site these days it's extraordinary what people are coming out with. Who would have thought Americans would start talking about communists and liberals like its the 1960s? The whole country seems to be regressing into some crazy, McCarthyist, insular, paranoid lunatic asylum where the people least well equipped to speak out make bold pronouncements on the internet and even less well equipped people somehow get put in charge. What next burning books? It really is the Handmaids Tale made real.

Yep, the world is at war and the lunatics are running the show. The cure: properly educate the masses

Good luck with that. They're way too busy playing video games.

>>> Basically, the gaming studios have invented the perfect distraction from the reality of what's going on in the world today. <<<

The public's attention span and memory is pretty much limited to what happened the day before yesterday. They refuse to remember why they voted tRump out of office in the first place.

They can't diagnose or reject a pathological liar, who is also a psychopath, that suffers from paranoid delusions of grandeur. Instead, they vote him back into the presidency.,

Stupid is, as stupid does.,

Thanks... totally forgot he even existed... I'd assumed he'd long since stopped posting on this site...

And as for this being like the cold war - that kind of makes my point for me... had one side decided to stop advancing, then the other would have won that much faster... So if the US decides not to advance AI, then they are conceding victory to China...
But what happens if China's AI decides to turn on China? That is a very real possibility especially if its actions are unchecked.
Out of touch with reality? Yep… humanity always fears and hates that wihich it doesn’t understand… if only people would research and see that AI is a GOOD thing - but they’d rather fear monger….
IMO, AI isn't inherently good or evil. What it is used for and its training is what shapes AI and whether its good or evil. In this latest case, it decided it needed to cheat to win the test it was was taking. IMO, that's a very human characteristic that it almost certainly learned through its training - from humans.

Somebody once wrote, (or said), when asked, "what would you do if a supremely super intelligent race landed on earth and claimed they only wanted to 'serve us'".

In reply, the gentleman said, "I'd ask them if they were going to serve us baked or fried".

The origin and inspiration for this was an episode of "The Twilight zone".

The Inspiration: The joke plays on the famous 1962 Twilight Zone episode titled "To Serve Man," where aliens visit Earth with a book called To Serve Man, which turns out to be a cookbook.

Let me remind you what the Uber-Idi0t of USSR, V.Lenin, declared - "The goal of socialism is communism".
Socialism and communism are the same, the difference is like between Stage 3 and Stage 4 cancer. Social democracy has absolutely nothing in common with socialism, aside from the string 'social'.

Communism or Socialism, call it what you will, has no bearing on the government practiced in the Soviet Union_ full stop.

Now, if you had read the Communist Manifesto, (which BTW I have), it basically expounds on, "power to the people", and, "one for all and all for one", except the business ruling class, ("the bourgeoisie) who were to be disposed of. (along with many classes above them. In short, anybody that wasn't dirt poor, "the proletariat", had to go.

If you take into account that the Soviets were governed by a murderous dictator, Josef Stalin, you can't say that Socialism or Communism was ever truly practiced in "Mother Russia"

Given that Socialist values include universal healthcare, which both Canada and Norway, among many others practice, you can't say their governments are "Communist". You can categorize them as "Social Democracies", and they do practice some of the values espoused by pure Socialism.

Now, I am thoroughly tired of listening to the great uninformed here at TechSpot". BS like, "Bernie Sanders is a commie", is nonsense. If Sanders did honeymoon in Russia, it was probably around the time of "Glasnost". when a reasonable man, Mikel Gorbachev, was running the show. Under his watch, the Berlin Wall came down, Germany was reunified, and we got along pretty well with the "Ruskies".

Here's some 'nice music' for ya. Pay particular attention to when they come back in after the laser light show. Daltrey yells Townshend's famous last words, "meet the new boss, same as the old boss". And well Stalin was as bad, or worse than the Czar they got rid of.
