New vaccine from MIT and Caltech could prevent future coronavirus outbreaks

The big picture: Researchers from MIT and Caltech have developed an experimental nanoparticle vaccine designed to protect against a broad range of coronaviruses. This includes not only variants of the virus responsible for Covid-19 but also other coronaviruses currently circulating in animals that could potentially jump to humans in the future. In simple terms, scientists may have discovered a way to stay ahead of the next coronavirus outbreak before it even starts.

Traditional vaccines typically focus on the most accessible parts of viruses, which are often the rapidly mutating receptor-binding domains. These RBDs enable the virus to latch onto and infect human cells. However, because these regions mutate frequently with each new replication of the virus, vaccines targeting them can quickly become ineffective unless updated promptly.

Caltech researchers decided to take a different approach. Instead of targeting the highly variable RBDs, they focused on more conserved regions of the virus – areas that remain relatively stable across different strains. They engineered a nanoparticle vaccine that displays 60 copies of RBDs from up to eight different coronaviruses. While these viruses share conserved regions, their variable regions differ, allowing the vaccine to prepare the immune system to respond to a broader range of potential threats.

When injected, the nanoparticle exposes the immune system to all the distinct RBD shapes simultaneously. This prompts the body to produce antibodies targeting both the variable and conserved regions of the viruses.

With this approach, the immune system gains a robust line of defense capable of neutralizing entire families of viruses, making it much harder for any single strain to evolve and bypass the vaccine's protection.

In animal studies, a nanoparticle vaccine called "mosaic-7COM" outperformed earlier iterations, such as "mosaic-8," by generating strong antibody responses against seven different SARS-CoV-2 variants and four other related coronaviruses from the sarbecovirus family. The vaccine successfully prevented the virus from infecting the test animals.

Remarkably, mosaic-7COM also demonstrated near-equivalent effectiveness in animals that had previously received existing mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccines. This finding reflects a real-world scenario, where next-generation vaccines must enhance pre-existing immunity.

Efforts are already underway to progress the mosaic-8 nanoparticle into clinical trials. Researchers also plan to test mosaic-7COM soon, given its superior performance in recent studies. Additionally, they are exploring ways to adapt the vaccines for mRNA delivery, a step that could simplify large-scale manufacturing.

As former covid vaccines often made people experience at least partial symptoms, I can't imagine your body trying to fight "60 copies of RBDs from up to eight different coronaviruses" will be pleasant.

(Even before covid, I always found the 'give yourself flu symptoms for 2 days to avoid the chance of getting the flu for a week' to be a lackluster tradeoff.)

I think you would still have partial symptoms but not times 60. More like having a skeleton key that unlocks all the doors instead of having a key that only unlocks one.

The vaccine symptoms are proportional to how well your immune system is prepared to fight covid. The more severe the symptoms from the vaccine, the less prepared your immune system is, and it is working hard to build defenses. Also count your blessings there is a vaccine as the real thing will make you very very sick.

Now if you have no reaction from the vaccine, it means you are ready to go.

Obviously not 60 times as that would likely hospitalize you. But even 50% worse than already feeling bad could change the 'is this worth it' calculus.

Likewise not getting sick from the real thing means you are really ready to go.

Scientific studies have repeatedly shown that natural immunity is superior to vaccine protection.

Also, all reports of the current variant are that it is very mild. So mild that people are often asymptotic. (Most viruses follow this pattern of becoming less deadly and more contagious because that is how natural selection works.)

That's a false equivalence fallacy. Try again.
How about... Don't wear clothes because natural skin is better. Don't sleep on a bed because natural ground is better. Don't drive a car because natural walking is better. Don't use a computer because natural communication is better. lol

Jokes aside, the medical industry is pretty big because it makes lives better, but it is opt-in, no one forces you.

Good lord... last time I checked, cancer isn't a virus.
The body's immune system is responsible for recognizing and attacking diseases, this includes external sources like viruses and internal sources like cancerous cells. Vaccines are an aid to help the immune system recognize diseases when they fall short. So, if there is ever a medicine that aids the immune system to recognize and attack cancerous cells, it will be called a vaccine.

I think I will pass like I did when the gov was attacking my rights 24/7

I have lost count though, would this be the 4th booster? Or we start counting from the beginning? Maybe the vax lovers can elaborate

And you believe the hyper crony big pharma mega corps would do this for the people? If they do I surely wouldn't want to be the first ginny pig! The big pharma are the opposite they currently hold patents on gmo and are attempting to monopolies the cure. They have a conflict of interest. This would be a big leap of faith imo!

Again, all of those examples aren't real or are wrong. Beds are definitely better.

"Natural" immunity is just the term that means your immune system learned from getting sick (e.g., a live virus vs a dead/artificial one). Obviously things aren't better just because they are broadly speaking natural (e.g., natural poisons) so don't confuse the medical terminology with me being a hippy.

Your immune system learning more from a live virus is scientific fact. The downside is that you have to get sick or at least almost get sick (successfully fighting off the invading virus).

I was merely making a counter point to the not scientific but still oft repeated narrative that vaccines are a) a magic bullet and b) the only way to be safe against future (re)infections.

The medical industry is big for a number of reasons including making life better and making people believe it will make their life better (see any dermatologist or plastic surgeons office) BUT for a short while they DID try to force you. People losing their jobs over taking a vaccine is not opt-in. And adults making decisions about their own body is the most basic freedom imaginable.

To be clear, natural walking is better. The problem resides in the fact that you cant get a far as you need to go, in the time allotted.

If I didn't use a computer, how would I contact my friends at Techspot, with whom I'm always in perfect harmony and agreement? It gives me goosebumps just thinking I'd miss out on the thrill of that camaraderie.

Spiraling into depression now...counting backwards 10, 9......, when I hit zero, my life will sadly have no purpose.

Well now, that's not stopping these PitA red states from outlawing abortion, is it? You'd think they weren't Democratic. <pun intended.

Studies shown that it can be or at least it can be infectious, I do not recall exact wording.
This is a fairly knew stuff, they need to do a lot more studies.
But I am personally very excited to have protection from some of the most dangerous cancer types
Well, HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus, appears to cause some strains of cervical and anal cancer, so...

You're my hero. Can't stand so-called 'purists.' 🎉😊🌟

What they call leukemia in cats is caused by a virus. "FelV". Dunno, if it just mimics the human symptoms, or it is a cancer as such. They can sometimes recover from it on their own.
