Ninja calls out Twitch for using his dormant channel to promote porn

Facepalm: Amazon-owned Twitch has been experimenting with showing recommended content on streamers’ pages when they are offline (something Ninja said only happened on his account, by the way). Worse yet, one of the top-rated pieces of recommended content on the channel for a brief period was a porn account.

It’s understandable that Twitch might be a bit salty over Tyler “Ninja” Blevins’ recent move to rival service Mixer by Microsoft. After all, Ninja had amassed more than 14.5 million followers over the past eight years, helping to make Twitch one of the largest streaming platforms in the world.

Most assumed Ninja’s abandoned channel would simply go dormant or be shut down entirely but Twitch had other plans.

Ninja was livid when he learned of what happened, calling Twitch out in an apology video on the matter. This got the attention of Twitch CEO Emmett Shear who in a statement, admitted they have been experimenting with recommended content but that the lewd material grossly violated their terms of service (that account has since been permanently suspended). Shear also said they’ve suspended recommendations as a whole while they investigate how the porn content came to be promoted.

Last but not least, Shear apologized directly to Ninja. “it wasn’t our intent, but it should have not happened. No excuses.”

Waaah, the guy paid millions to play videa saw a naughty on his account! Oh the humanity!

If you dont want that to happen, actually shut down your channel next time bud. Or maybe stop whining about literally nothing.

If Microsoft was smart they would have built an all-star team not just buy one player. Should have gotten Shroud, Dr. Disrespect, and Tfue as well.

Half measures are rarely successful.

I think what he does screws young minds much worse than any porn. He gets paid millions to promote fairy tails for the naive who then try to make a living in gaming.

I disagree with this, he put a lot of work to get where he is now and you sir sound like a jealous baby. Yes not everyone will ever get the life he has BUT they all have a chance by trying. Its like hating a guy who invested in stock and got rich and you either didn't try or tried and failed, this is life, I burst my *** for £30000 a year but I can only blame myself for it because I have never took any risks to try better my life :)

Are you following what happened? He called out Twitch for allowing illicit material that violates their own policies to use his channel as a medium. Twitch is 100% on the hook, as their CEO's response showed.

And delete an account with 14.5m followers? Lol no.

And you sound like a casino manager, waving Free-Drink cards. Everyone deserves a chance to get screwed. The gaming industry is a modern-day casino, they are the only ones winning.

The same as any other entertainer really. At least with the gaming scene there isn't all the nastiness that comes with the actual entertainment industry.

Don't they suggest content based on the browsing history of the person who saw the ad?

To be fair, how is this different from professional athletes, where not everyone has the genetics (not dismissing the hard work to get there) to reach the level of pro / olympic athletes?

To me it seems like "Ninja" is the one being "salty". Bye bye "Ninja". Have fun whining about Twitch. No one cares.

The parents whose kids were exposed to porn accounts via his page probably care.

And if you watch his video clip, he straight up says he's been trying to get his account taken down. Twitch is using his brand to advertise other pages. Yeah, I'd be a little upset, too, if I were being associated with that garbage.

While I empathize, that's not TwitchTV's fault, nor Ninja's. Hacking and foul nonsense happens.

You're asking me to care about someone who ditched a platform that enabled his success... effectively a betrayal. Um, no thank you. Loyalty is important to me and Ninja's move showed none...

No, I'm not asking you to care about him. And how ridiculous you view vertical career movement as "betrayal". He's a creator, not some pawn of a giant streaming service. He can go with the money and opportunity, if he so chooses.

You think going from TwitchTV, with his 14million+ subscribers to Microsoft's weak-sauce nonsense a "vertical career movement"?!?:laughing::laughing: More like a bowl-movement...

That's true, everyone has that freedom, no matter how clueless the choice is.

So then Twitch needs to "ban themselves" for a little while, just like the streamers they ban who "accidentally" show pornographic material, or stream material they are not legally allowed to stream. Hmm... funny how Twitch doesnt even get a slap on the wrist.... yet, some of these streamers accounts never get restored (I know a majority of them are temporary bans) Yet, Twitch serves no fine? Correct me if I missed something...

Someone seems to care a lot more than they like to imply.

Are you suggesting that twitch viewers arent nasty? Have you really seen what some of this content really promotes? There's so much "nastyness" that these streamers have to deal with, just the same. There's still enough creepy *******s out there who stalk and spam obscene/illegal stuff that if they didnt have mods to deal with it quickly enough, would be a lot more obvious to you. I've seen some pretty "cancerous" people harassing streamers.... and then they follow them into their Discord server and any social accounts they can spam obscene crap. I'm not saying it's worse one way or another, I'm just saying that it's still there.

For example, one girl I know who streams... gets endless supplies of **** pictures. It doesnt matter how many accounts she blocks. Just a little example, anyways.

Who says they aren't trying? Ninja may have been the first test, but with the success he got from the switch over others might be interesting especially as twitch keeps throwing gasoline on the dumpster fire.

No joke, I could really see Mixer take off if it's just half as unbiased when it comes to moderation. All I've heard about twitch is how camgirls get off free while small streamers get the hammer for speaking out against it. Why stay on a sinking ship when the lifeboat works fine?

Would you say the same for every other athlete? Their are millions of children playing sports with an ambition of being in the top 1% (and get paid millions). Some people put the effort in and make it to that level. Many millions do not. What's the difference?

Ps. I've only watched Ninja one time.
