When I went to install XP it asked to pick the partition and my computer shut off and then after that it said root32dill missing. I finally got it to boot with the XP disk and it won't let me pick a partition it installs over the old one and my hard drive is still full but I can't access any of my old files. Can someone please help Dell want me to pay 100.00 to fix the problem yeh right.

Tell us more about the computer model and configuration.
There is software that will work, but not if your hard drive is full.

Dell Dimension 2300,Dell told me that there wasen't partition but it said pass in diagnostics ans disk management says good health. Can't I just format it and then load XP?

Yes. Format it using the Windows Disk. Remove the Partition in the beginning of the formatting process, then create the partition afterward, then begin your formatting.
Everything will be fine.

What I mean is can I format it under my computer with the disk management and then make a partition before I install XP the normal way?
